These Silver Nickels have been out of issue for over 75 years since the World War II era. Millions of silver coins have been melted over the years for the precious silver bullion, leaving just a fraction of the original coins for todays collectors. 8" x 10" x .25"
During World War II, nickel was a valuable component in guns, tanks, and airplanes. To help the war effort, the U.S. Mint eliminated nickel from the 5 Nickel coins. Instead, it struck the Nickel in a new alloy that included 35% silver Made from 1942 until the war ended in 1945, these were emergency coins and the first and only Silver Nickels in U.S. history. The Silver Nickels were made from 1942 until the war ended in 1945. During this time, they were struck at all three U.S. Mints Philadelphia, Denver, and San Francisco.
This collection includes one vintage coin from each year of issue and U.S. Mint for a spectacular and complete 11-coin collection. (No 1942 coin was made in Denver.) In order to identify the Silver Nickels from earlier regular coins made with nickel, the U.S. Mint included a prominent Mint Marks on the reverse, above the dome of Monticello. A large D is for Denver, S is for San Francisco, and P is for Philadelphia. This was the first time in history that the P mark was ever used.

Solid BU coin. Near flawless fields & eagle, liberty had a couple bag marks. Good value.

Very few scratches or cuts. Bit of a weak strike, especially on the back, but all details and lettering are visible to a greater or lesser degree. Compares visually pretty well with others viewable online.
