All the Colors of the Dark is my first favorite book of 2035. It has a little bit of everything - an unlikely hero, a serial k•ller and the girls gone missing, and even some romance. There are some great twists, and the ending is so satisfying. There are scenes of tremendous beauty as well as some heart wrenching moments.
Let me just tell y’all - I LOVE THIS BOOK! The characters are amazing, the writing is lush, the story is well thought out and intriguing. And did I say the characters are amazing - they are perfectly imperfect! I’m pretty sure I have a crush on Joseph “Patch” Macauley.
This is one of those books that you desperately want to be made into a movie even though you know it won’t be as good as the book, but you want it anyway! I checked IMDb, and it’s not there yet, but I know it will be.
I highly recommend All the Colors of the Dark. Don’t be put off by the length. Read it and let me know what you think - I’d love to discuss!

A must-read, but not for everyone. If you want to be spoon-fed, this book is not for you. If you enjoy a slow burn plot and thoughtful character development, this is one you won't want to miss.
"All the Colors of the Dark" is a hauntingly beautiful story that begins in the 1970s and ends in the early 2000s, mixing the hunt for a serial killer with a search for a missing person. This is the story of how personal tragedy and obsessive hope can bring out both the best and the worst in people, blurring lines of what society deems "moral behavior".
If you like coming-of-age, crime/suspense, and tragic love stories, don't walk- run and pick up a copy of this book!

I really enjoyed this book. While reading there were instances I felt as though it could have been a series / several books based on how the writer tells the stories. It felt longer than it needed to be at times but it all came together so beautifully that I can live with it. Very descriptive and verbose, it was easy to jump into the story especially since each chapter was short. Well developed characters with so many twists and turns and tragedies and victories. I highly recommend.

Couldn't put it down until I finished! (600 pages in 3 days). Chris Whitaker is a beautiful writer who goes deep and wide with all his characters. Can't wait to read more of his books. Long after you read All the Colors of the Dark, you will remember the characters and wish you could have more. The book develops themes of love, mystery, thriller and great people. You will not be sorry buying and reading.

This is an expertly crafted mystery with characters you care about. I was very invested in both Patch and Saint the entire book. Though it is almost 600 pages, the chapters are very short and there is a lot of white space in the book making the word count actually shorter than a typical 600 page book. I think this book would be difficult to listen to given the writing style of the author, and I often had to reread a sentence or passage to understand the meaning. One complaint I have read is the "flowery nature" of the language he used, and I think that comment has merit. But overall, the story was so well crafted, I overlooked that. I have also read comments about the implausibility of parts of the story, but I found it no more implausible than many thrillers. I read for enjoyment and to suspend reality for a while, so I am not going to pick it apart. I found it to be a page turner and a fairly quick read.

I started to give this book 4 stars due to struggling a bit with all the twists and turns, the sometimes unclear storyline, the obsessive behaviors, and the strangeness of some scenes, as well as too much crude language, even from a child. However, I couldn’t put it down, couldn’t wait to find out what happened next and really got into the characters and the far-fetched events. Amazing writing, a haunting story of obsession and love, and super descriptions made this a terrific book. Thus the 5 stars.

In this gripping thriller, a young boy named Patch, who lost an eye and is affectionately nicknamed "Pirate," finds himself caught in the deadly web of a serial rapist and murderer. Held hostage alongside a beautiful young girl named Grace, Patch relies on her strength and resourcefulness to survive. Patch’s best friend, Saint, refuses to believe he’s gone and relentlessly pressures Sheriff Nix to follow every lead, ultimately leading to his rescue. However, Grace mysteriously vanishes, leaving Patch haunted by her disappearance.
Determined to find her, Patch embarks on a relentless quest, following a trail of missing girls across multiple states. Over the years, Saint becomes a police officer and later joins the FBI, remaining one of the few who believes in Patch, even if she harbors doubts about Grace's existence. With a moral compass more rigid than Patch’s, Saint still supports him, despite his willingness to cross lines to protect those he loves.
Spanning decades and filled with unexpected twists, this story is a layered, suspenseful journey that keeps readers on the edge of their seats. Though the narrative might feel prolonged at times, the complex characters and constant surprises make it a thrilling read.

I don’t even know how to find words. I mean… wow. What an incredible story, full of rich, unforgettable characters and completely unexpected arcs. I can’t even express the brilliance of this story, of the many stories within. It’s beautiful and heartbreaking and hopeful. Wow.

I was a little bit unsure early on in the book about how much I was going to enjoy it. I liked it from the start, but felt my feelings for it 'lag' a bit for part of the first quarter of it. Then, I'm not even sure how it happened, but it grabbed me by the heart and kept me all the way through. I had a hard time putting it down (man, I just LOVE short chapters) and had quite a few surprises. Great book, excellent and creative plot that was well told.

This by far is the most emotionally charged book I have ever read( And I have read a lot over my 70 years). It is beautifully written with such warmth, compassion and understanding. The events are harrowing but the characters are so real and so undeserving of the horrors they have to endure. The description of places and events is breath taking and the journey over so many years enthralling. Read, enjoy and keep a big box of tissues handy because you are definitely going to need them!
