As a longtime fan of Luke Bryan, I was eagerly awaiting the release of American Heartbreak, and it definitely did not disappoint. Zach Bryan è stato l'evento musicale americano del 2022, senza ombra di dubbio. Ragazzo nato ventisei anni fa a Okinawa, Giappone, nella base americana dove il padre serviva nella Marina, è poi cresciuto sulla "terra rossa" dell'Oklahoma, servendo lui stesso nella US Navy. E' proprio durante quel periodo che comincia a scrivere canzoni, fino a pubblicare qualcosa su YouTube. Un pezzo finisce per diventare virale e la vita di Zach Bryan cambia per sempre. Due dischi autoprodotti e la Warner che lo mette sotto contratto per questo incredibile doppio cd (o triplo lp) di oltre due ore, con la bellezza di 34 (trentaquattro!!) canzoni. E "American Heartbreak" checché se ne dica del fatto che oggi i giovani non siano abituati ad ascoltare dischi troppo lunghi, esplode letteralmente nelle classifiche country, vendendo, a ottobre 2022, qualcosa come 700000 copie, portando Bryan dal suonare in una stanza di albergo a suonare nelle arene. Un trionfo e una tipica storia americana. E il disco com'è? Bello, a tratti bellissimo, e la cosa più sconvolgente, è che su un numero così alto di canzoni, se ne scarteranno sì e no tre, ma proprio se si fosse obbligati, perché in realtà l'album tiene dall'inizio alla fine, senza problemi. Fra l'altro l'etichetta di artista country gli è un po' stata appiccicata con la forza, perché Zach fa musica americana a tutto tondo, con una squisita vena cantautorale, con una forza "heartland rock", tanto che il disco è stato inciso a New York proprio per, dice Bryan, respirare un'aria diversa, più meticcia. Qui dentro troviamo del country, ma troviamo la ballata urbana di Jesse Malin, l'afflato di un certo Springsteen, troviamo John Mellencamp e troviamo tutti quegli artisti dell'Oklahoma, come una delle band che Zach Bryan ama di più, i Turnpike Troubadour. Tanta, tantissima roba, che se non fosse così ipertrofico, per me sarebbe il "Gold" di questi anni, visto che anche il primo Ryan Adams è ampiamente riscontrabile in queste canzoni. Bella voce, fra l'altro, molto duttile, e una lunga serie di turnisti, per un suono sempre fresco, eccellente, senza, incredibile, cedere niente al mainstream becero fatto di auto tune e similia. Niente di tutto questo, solo musica sana, sanissima, e almeno la metà dei pezzi sono di qualità molto alta. Basti pensare che da quest'opera, perché questa è, sono stati estratti la bellezza di sette singoli, per ora. Uno dei lavori più importanti almeno dal 2010 in poi. Vedremo come questo ragazzo saprà gestire fama e fortuna, in futuro, ma per ora ha già scritto un classico con "American Heartbreak".
