First off I was recommended this Aprilaire model by my HVAC contractor but they wanted over $1200.00 to supply it and install it. After reading a bit as well as asking Aprilaire tech support a few questions I knew I could do this myself. I purchased this as a Black Friday special so it was only $370 and included the installation kit with it too! I have included several pics of the install with my review. Zoom and you will notice I am really into “nice cable management” Really didn’t have any problems at all installing it but since my Nest thermostat only has four wires in the drywall, I can’t run just the furnace blower by itself from the Nest thermostat and thought this might effect the install wiring or operation in some way (More tech details on this later if yours is wired this way which I hear is common when you only have four wires and hook up a Nest thermostat) There is an install kit included in this box, but I really already had what I needed for the install so I didn’t use it at all and used flexible copper for my hot water line. The instructions are not clear where the four sheet metal screws go that are in the kit, but two go into the top two holes of the frame and two go to the control unit. You actually will need one more screw for the white temperature sensor that mounts to your siding so I added my own white screw to that. White screw to just really do it up right. Sure I am a bit anal….. Anyway since I only have four thermostat wires in my drywall I have used one wire for “Conmon” that use to be for G (blower only mode) I was worried that this might cause a problem in my install, but Aprilaire tech support said it would NOT and it worked fine. I followed all the wiring schematic exactly, but since there is NO G wire on my thermostat that was left out and there were no problems at all other than you can’t turn on blower only as was the case before the Aprilaire install. The Aprilaire has no problem turning on the blower fan by itself during a heat call or by itself just trying to add humidity when heat is not needed. One last thing, the test/reset resets the counter for hours used, so don’t do unnecessary testing since you will be doing resets. Seems like they should not be a combo thing. You can see I added an outlet where there was just a switch before for the 120 volt Aprilaire 700 cord and made it GFI since it was within six feet of a laundry tub. There is probably some code about having GFI with a humidifier because of water near by also…..

The install was pretty straight forward, any DIYer should be able to do it. Needs a good amount of space on the duct work so make sure you have the room. The install kit came with almost all the parts needed except that my local code does not allow saddle valves so I bought a sharkbite tee to use instead. So far it has worked really well, holds humidity really well, hardly uses any water with the recirculation feature, and is really quiet on the low setting. Air quality and comfort on cold days was significantly better than it was before we added the humidifier.

The Model 700, with its built-in fan, is an important improvement over the cheaper versions that operate based on the pressure differential between the input and output plenums- the cheaper versions add humidity before the burner, which cooks most of it out during heating (which is when you need humidity the most). I attached a simplified wiring diagram that I found online which results in the humidifier operating only when the HVAC unit is heating, and it eliminates the need for the added transformer that comes with the installation kit. Other recommendations: 1.) Make sure the mounting frame is perfectly level as installed (see picture). 2.) Seal the mounting frame to the plenum with caulk, it's amazing how leaky the basic design is on a pressurized plenum (leaking A LOT of cooled or warmed air into the attic, in my case). 3.) Install a water metering valve to fine tune how much water drains out the bottom of the unit, and is wasted. Amazon sells them, the copper line, the wire... 4.) If you are installing on an HVAC unit, connect the drain to the drain overflow that at least puts the wasted water on the ground in your yard, as opposed to the putting that water down the drain. 5.) Feeding hot water is much more effective for adding humidity than cold water. I connected mine to a circulation line that primes hot water to the furthest faucets when a pump is running. 6.) If you buy the installation kit (a waste of money), don't try to use the plastic hose, unless you just want leaks. I ended up buying copper line and replacing the leaky plastic line that came with the installation kit. 7.) Carefully tighten all the water fittings that are part of the humidifier... mine were loose (sloppy), and leaked in my attic.

I ordered my Aprilair 700 Humidifier and it arrived two days later as promised. Everything except the copper tubing, Drain tubing, Metal Screws and cabling was in the box. I followed the instructions and the install went smoothly once I bought the missing items, Instructions are clear and the template worked well. It took me 2 hours from start to finish, Straight forward, no help needed. I would recommend this humidifier, I have a large house and this humidifier does its job, no more guessing on the humidity setting, has a bright blue display of the relative humidity and it takes care of the adjustments itself, If you turn blower control on it will run the furnace fan for 2 minutes every hour to check the humidity, if the humidity is good it will stop, if not it will do its job and humidify the house, doesn't need the furnace to be running as it has fan control I would buy this again

I have wasted a lot of money on home humidifiers. Nothing has been successful until now. If you are looking for a first-time purchase or replacement, don’t consider anything other than the Aprilaire 700. Here’s why: Humidipads Do Not Work Flow through humidifiers cost approximately $100.00 per month in wasted water Ceramic drum humidifiers require major maintenance and do a minimal job Steam humidifiers are a little better if you can afford the operating cost. My hydro bill increased nearly $100.00 per month ‘Regular’ humidifiers rely on air movement from the heat exchanger to get into the pad and move some moisture through the by-pass and ultimately into your home. This results in a filter change every two months (at approximately $12.00 each) so it doesn’t plug up and lose efficiency (which is only minimal at best). For my money, I just found the best for me. I purchased an Aprilaire 700 from Amazon.ca, spent a couple of hours replacing a 400M model which was not a good buy, and now I am the happiest guy around. On setting ‘5’, I have 35% RH in my 2200 square foot two-storey home and my hardwood floors are happy again. I checked the digital automatic humidistat several times a day and when the RH reaches 33%, the system turns on until 36% at which time it rests again. Love it and know you will too. I do not work for or know anyone at Aprilaire. This is an honest evaluation and personal testimony. I forgot to mention the real reason this is a superior product that REALLY works. It is fan powered and forces the moisture from the Water Panel into the furnace for peak efficiency. The panel requires only annual service (not bi-monthly).

This is an excellent product. The quality is very good. I installed the unit myself with minimal difficulty. The instructions are straight forward and easy to follow for the most part. I think the wiring instructions could be a little more specific but I did not require any outside assistance to complete it and it worked perfectly as soon as it was turned on. I’m very pleased with the results. My home is more comfortable then it has ever been.

It was easy for me to install. But I have some knowledge on mechanical installation. If you do not, it will be much more difficult. Works pretty good. Very satisfied with this product

If you know electrical and plumbing, it's an easy install. Works great. Had to hook it up on the return side but still works great. Humidity went up 15% after two days and held steady at 49% in a 4300sqft home. Have a lot of high end guitars so very happy with the results.
