Overall I think this is a nice selection of beads and should be fun for adults to do with the kids. More adults need to make things with their children! This is also a good set to use to introduce young children to beading (about five to 8) with a few suggestions (see below). Why have kids bead? It could be frustrating for kids but that is ok, they need to learn to do difficult things and overcome frustration! Beading really helps to develop eye hand coordination in children as well as manual dexterity. Itâs a creative activity that gets them away from screens, helps teach them to be âproducersâ rather than âconsumersâ, gets them into a different type of brain wave then they are used to and helps them calm down (I know, I raised five sons mostly without T.V. and taught them all complicated beading techniques. When they needed birthday party gifts for girls they could bead something). Beading teaches kids something about giving of themselves and about pride in what they produce. I could go on and on but will stop now. Here are my suggestions for using this kit with children 5 to 8ish: 1. They give you a good bit of the silicone cord to string on but itâs in a bundle. The first thing I did was wrap this around something (for me that was an 1.5 inch long bar magnet that I covered in fabric tape, then I took a second covered magnet and snapped it next to the first. Itâs not coming unwound!). If you donât spool this up on something it will be a mess real soon. 2. The main container/divider full of beads (beautifully sorted by color) is very thin and full almost to the top with beads. Itâs very pretty this way but not practical with kids. (Be sure to open this carefully to avoid spilling the beads, press down on the container while you unsnap the lid). When my granddaughters get here for their next visit I may just dump all the disc beads into one larger container with a snapping lid. I donât think it will matter to them. I know the beads are going to get sort of mixed up anyway as they try to get the colors out of each compartment and I want them to spend time beading and not resorting beads! They can still pick through a mix of beads and get the color they want. 3. Mixing the colors together will make it easier to put the beads in my new electric bead spinner (from another Amazon vendor). 4. That leaves the question of needles. There were no needles in my set, nor mention of them, but these beads will string well on a âneedleâ made of flexible twisted wire. I can bend the tip of the wire needle too it so itâs not sharp. The package shows people just threading the beads straight onto the silicone cord but I think that is going to be challenging for both kids and adults. Iâm a long time beader and have taught many classes to kids and adults and I prefer not to give anyone under the age of 8 a sharp needle, but have used twisted wire, plastic yarn needles and dental floss threaders. 5. After tying off the cord a touch of glue in the knot Will help hold it. I usually use super glue, and need to do that for the kids. I think super glue will work with this cord. Have fun!
