This is a wonderful classic for early childhood educators. You can read it straight through or, if you're a restless reader like me, you can look up particular sections. This model of early education has much to offer! As an administrator it has helped me to find the words to articulate the purposes of child-centered approaches to parents and others. As an early childhood teacher, I used the framework in my classroom with great success for both preschool and later, for kindergarten. There are few roadmaps for working with young children. Too often we water down what is done in elementary school and think of that as effective with preschoolers. Ridiculous! Worksheets and too many teacher-directed lessons do not inspire nor engage young children. This book provides the research-based rationale and framework for effective early education that is developmentally sound. (By the way, the studies that you hear sited by politicians about the impact of early education are based on this approach.)

Flipping through the chapters in this book will inform you about the reason behind the popularity of High/Scope's early childhood curriculum: its efficient, paragonic planning. Planning makes a teacher...period. This curriculum teaches you to plan everything from the room arrangement to the assessment scheduling. Active learning incorporates itself into all aspects. The key experiences align almost like contact paper with most state-level educational standards for this age group. Please try it.

Everything you could ever want to know about High/Scope! PAGES on every learning center, in-depth explanation of plan/do/recall, so much more! I can't say enough about this book! I bought the older edition for just $1.99!!!

If you want the unedited version of the Highscope method of nursery education, then this is the book to buy. For teachers using EYFS 2012 it is a useful book to read as it demonstrates the' plan do review ' cycle in use with young children and how child- initiated activities are encouraged and observed. I was Highscope trained but many of the practices we had used gradually fell out of favour as the EYFS came in...now many colleagues are revisiting and applying some of the Highscope principles within their Nursery practice. Why did I buy a new copy....My old one had fallen apart with use!
