This little string fixed my volume pedal and made it feel better than from the factory. That being said, this was the most frustrating install in MY LIFE!!! The instruction pictures were in black and white and I couldn't make out what they were doing. I installed it wrong 3 times. I had to use a coat hangar to thread the string in the most awkward way possible. These things were not meant to come apart. I have small hands, yet twisting the string around the knob while pulling the spring and simultaneously twisting the knob in the opposite direction was the worst experience of my life.

I dont know what all the negative reviews are talking about with respect ro it being difficult to install this. It took me less than five minutes. All I used was a Phillips screwdriver to remove the input/output block and a piece of the broken string. Put the new shorter string into place at the bottom of the pedal. Put the spring on it, loop a piece of the broken sting on the other end of the spring. Put the longer string into the top end of the pedal, wrap it around the pot like you're supoosed to, pull on the broken string attached to the spring to stretch it so the new longer string can reach it, loop the new longer string onto the spring, and cut the old string that was used to pull the spring off the spring. Reinstall the input/output. Done. Worked great the first time. It's unfortunate that this part breaks but its cheap and easy to replace.

The kit is reasonably priced. Instructions are a little sparse. It's best to buy a hook tool to make the job of replacement more straightforward. My pedal breaks the string probably every 6 mos or so, so I have to buy a couple of these kits and keep a spare around at all times. I did come up with a little technique, though, to get a lot more life out of these. Since the breakage always occurred at the sharp bend of the nylon string coming through the hole in the pedal, I put a piece of wiring heat-shrink on the string at that point. It is still small enough to fit through the hole, but prevents the edges of the hole from gouging at the string and keeps it from breaking. See the attached pictures.

The string replacement is a challenge unless you have the correct tools. Definitely watch a video how to change the strings. Once you have the tool you need it is not quite that difficult, just a tight spot to work. The replacment string arrived quickly and complete. I ordered an extra on my purchase to save on shipping. Pedal works like new again.

It is a bit tough to install the spring to the string All through that is the way it is designed

This pedal doesn’t really disassemble to any degree (it’s basically just a milled block of aluminum), so, the repair seems overly complicated for such an archaic pot adjustment mechanism (it’s essentially the same design as a treadle lathe or sewing machine. The only panel you can easily remove is the cable connection hub, and unless you also want to have a solder job to do, you need to secure that to the pedal somehow so it’s not just hanging off and getting banged around during the repair. Know that even with this removed, though, there is very little clearance inside the pedal. I’m not sure what tiny-handed people are assembling these at the factory, but it has got to be a labor intensive operation–even if they’ve got a bunch of people with baby hands. You’re going to need a couple of picks, tweezers, and/or forceps. I had to use them for practically the entire operation, but you definitely need it when you’re attaching the spring to the longer string loop and pulling the longer string loop onto the final pulley. The instructions laughably suggest using a paperclip to assist in the final spring stretching and placement on the pulley to set the pot. Go ahead and try that. You’ll only be lining the pockets of Big Paperclip, as you break clip after clip. I had all the tools, but if you don’t, just go to Harbor Freight and get some, it will be worth it. Basically, approach this repair as if you’re planning on building a ship in a bottle, and plan accordingly Value-for-money-wise, this kit is great. Full disclosure, I just went ahead and ordered a new duplicate pedal when I ordered the kit. I was prepared to just chuck the old pedal. The kit’s only four bucks, though, so I figured I’d give it a shot. I really wish the VP Jr 25k wasn’t the only pedal that produces a smooth swell with active electronics. The pedal is basically just one big example of bad design. I now have three Ernie Ball Volume pedals. The full size 500k Stereo Pan, the VP Jr 25k this kit was meant to repair, and the VP Jr 25k I ordered with this kit. Ever since I started using Ernie Ball volume pedals, I’ve been waiting for one of these strings to break. The fact that they sell repair kits for just this problem should indicate it’s a major design flaw. So, the primary functional mechanism is made to break, and then they put that made to break part inside of a box that nearly impossible to access. It’s verges on the perverse. Should one pay four bucks for the kit and a minimum of an hour of pure frustration, or $99 for the pedal? Honestly, it’s a wash for me. If I had to do one or the other, I’d say just drop the $99 for a new pedal. But that wasn’t the case for me. I did both and spent $103, plus an hour of yelling at the pedal, and got two volume pedals. I guess I can use one as a backup, or use it for synths, or screw around with one in my pedal chain (since the 25k resistance will allow it to play nice with pedals).

Exact replacement. Not difficult to install, but very fiddly. Recommend looking up a YouTube video. Highly recommend having a set of small pick probes handy.

Worked great, the repair wasnt really that bad with the right tools. You absolutely HAVE to have the right pick and hook tools for the job. I got a set of 3 and used all 3 of them for the job, usually 2 at a time just to hold the string and spring in place. This would be impossible with just your fingers. Also, YES this IS the correct part for the MVP.
