Make sure to rip plugs apart before trying to ignite. Once ripped apart ignites easily with fire starter. Great value for money for emergency kit. Small and packabke. Slight smell and noise while burning but not a big deal for me.

This is our second or third purchase. They work. Like others say, we melted some parafin and some beeswax (separate batches), and dunked a few of these into that wax (in and out quickly). We did this about 8-10 times and built up a nice layer of wax on the outside. Yes, it adds to the waterproofing, but more importantly, it increases the burn time a bit. I think we got 10-12 minutes out of a half that we had dipped in the melted beeswax. In a pinch while backpacking, if you have a zipper that sticks, you can take one of the dipped version and rub the zipper to help loosen it up - double use. I've even managed to use the beeswax versions like lipbalm - triple use.

This tinder is cylinder shaped 1 3/8ths inches long and 1/4 inch in diameter. This appears to be a very densely packed cotton like material that is impregnated with some form of wax. This product will not light with a ferro rod unless it is fluffed up to expose the inner fibers. It took me a couple minutes working the tinder to the point where I had enough fibers exposed to light with a ferro rod. Once lit, the tinder burned for about 4 minutes in a slow light drizzling rain. Not bad!.. On a whim, I tried to light a tinder without fluffing up using a lighter.. it eventually lit but it did not want to stay burning and had to re-light until it had burned through the outer layer into the interior fibers. Once it had burned into the interior fibers, the tinder continued to burn nicely for about 6 minutes.. All in all a nice product, similar to others using the same concept. I deducted one star due to the amount of time and effort it took to get the internal fibers exposed enough to light with a ferro rod. In an emergency, where a person is cold and wet, the time to get the tinder ready to ignite would be aggravating. If time and effort are not an issue, this tinder should work fine. The good news, I was able to place 25 of these in a tin about the size of an Altoids tin. These can be easily cut in half to double the amount of emergency tinder.

I found these very easy to fray out and easy to light with a ferro rod. I have tested them down to 20°F and they performed well enough that I have full confidence down to -10. Let's hope I am not wrong that assumption. They are light weight and easy to throw in a pack for hunting or hiking as an emergency option. Always lig hts within 2 strikes of the ferro rod and burns for between 3 and 5 minutes, depending on how much you fray out for a hotter burn.

These work very well. We put them in our fire kits in our emergency bags. They burn much longer than they advertise. They do so well, that we don't use a whole one unless it's very wet conditions. We usually use a f rod for fire starting, but sometimes we need something quick and easy, especially if it's damp. We normally only use 1/3 of one to start a fire in normal conditions. We've purchased these numerous times.

I've used wax-infused fire starters like this before and they are GREAT for starting fires with even the smallest of sparks. But this design is difficult to "fluff" so that it will catch a spark easily. I have to rub it between a couple of rocks for hunks of wood to break it up enough to use. Once you do that, it works great, (just like the other ones on the market). I personally recommend the type that looks like a woven piece of rope/cord. They light much easier because you can easily "fluff" the end of the cord with just your hands (even if they are cold and numb) and once it is going, you are able to move it around the tinder like a long-burning match instead of having to just drop it into the tinder and hope for an ignition as is the case with this particular style. Also, you can snuff out the rope/cord version for reuse if your tinder lights quickly. These can be portioned (cut up) for multiple uses but once a portion is lit, that's it. So, great material but poor design for easy and/or multiple uses per piece. Starting a fire easily in a cold weather or an emergency situation is important stuff... so I hope this info helps you decide the best thing for you.

Don't matter the condition, these will start a fire as long as it's no hurricane winds. Have used these on just about every camping trip since I bought them and they don't struggle to start a fire. Easy to just fluff and light.

Long, thick and dense, these have got a solid 3-5 minutes of burn time in them, and they burn with a large flame that would easily light wood. They light very easily once torn in half and fluffed up. I did have quite a bit of trouble lighting one after I soaked it, so keep them dry or do your own testing if that is important to you.
