I'm using this with an iPad. Wireless set up took 1 minute using WPS. You do not have to use the HP Smart app to set-up, print or make copies. You do have to use it to scan. And you do have to give it access to your wireless network to scan. However you do not need it for anything but scanning and you can turn off its' permission to the network under settings, Privacy, on the iPad. You can tell HP not to annoy you with anything when you set up the account. It cost $99.99 when I bought it in August, so a pretty good deal as my Canon copier (I bought the HP primarily to make copies) has an issue with the laser unit right now. From my quick look at the HP Smart app I judge it, the app, to be somewhat difficult to use but very full featured if that is what you are looking for. This printer/copier/scanner is small, lightweight and fast and very easy to use. For those who say that the app doesn't work on a desktop, there is a separate piece of software for the desktop machines. And for those who found no directions, you must download the user manual from HP. Just Google "HP LaserJet MFP M140w Wireless Printer user manual" and get it. The quick start guide is in the box as is the power cord. You can attach this printer to a desktop/laptop via USB with the proper cord which is not included.

This is a fantastic printer for the price. It's great to have monochrome printing available. It is certainly a lot cheaper than using color ink the printer works perfect although I had a couple of hiccups connecting to wireless. However that was probably more due to human software. It's a good buy if this is what you're looking for.

The HP Smart software needs a lot of help! I've spent several full days to find a way to connect this printer to 3 different laptops/tablets with limited feature success on a Panasonic Toughbook running Windows 10 and Samsung Android tablet, and completely unable to connect to an HP laptop running Windows 11. None of the Windows devices would load HP Smart, HP Easy Start, or separate device drivers for the Windows OS which were difficult to find as HP wants you to use HP Smart. I read endless HP support fixes/solutions and interacted with a virtual assistant none of which gave a solution. The virtual assistant just reiterated the support documentation. Third party solutions again just reiterated HP solutions. As for the printer it is very compact, prints pretty good, scanning was a bit grainy compared to other MFP's I have owned. The fail on this is

Some difficulty in the beginning, trying to set up with your phone and printing, but we figured it out. We were persistent. A lot of words being said, but after we got through that it prints great it’s working from the phones. It’s working from the computer the laptop it’s small. It has to be no higher than 8 inches Which compact it fits anywhere. I quickly connects to your home Wi-Fi.

Was difficult to get connected initially for some reason, then it just started working. Got this to replace my old HP 1022 - just wanted something small and simple for black and white prints. So far it's working great! Can connect from apple devices (my mac mini, mac studio, ipads) and my windows PCs. Did NOT have to install the app on the ipads / macs for this to work.

Super easy to set up. Directions were clear. I downloaded the app and it took less than 5 minutes. Prints easily from ipad, iphone and macbook laptop. Originally purchased to replace ink cartridge printer for home use only. Highly recommend.

Took 2 days and a lot of frustration to get it installed but it works good and seems like a good, quality printer. Make sure you are attaching to the same WiFi network as the device you are installing if from and have your correct WiFi password handy. Once it’s installed from the device with an operating internet service and a working WiFi signal you can then add other devices to operate with the printer. I almost threw it out the window a few times but if you stay calm and work through it you will be happy you did. It’s not the printer or it’s software that is the problem, it usually is issues or problems with the computer operating systems or just settings that need to be figured out and worked through. I’m not computer savvy but was eventually able to do it by googling and watching YouTube videos. Hope this helps.

I spent a long time setting this printer up. The HP Smart App kept showing the printer was offline. I‘m embarrassed to say how long this took me. I didn’t return it because I had already created an HP Smart account. If you’re not tech savvy HP Smart online support probably won’t be helpful and there is no number to call. This was a hassle for me to set up but not giving up was key ( trial and error). I do like its compact size. Too soon to comment on quality.

Nice little cheap laser printer. I don't print often, and got tired of inkjet cartridges drying out after almost every use, so decided that a laser printer was cheaper for me in the long run. I needed an all-in-one as I actually use the copy and scan features more than I print. Set up was relatively easy, as I am using it connected via a USB cable as my desktop PC is not wireless capable and is hardwired to the router. I did need to make sure I downloaded the correct software for this direct from the HP site. My Windows 10 computer had no problem recognizing it right away. I have taken a point off as I am not yet sure of the longevity of this cheaper model. I may change this later. Edit: Adding the extra star. This little printer just works, even if I've let it sit for a long period of time. No fussing around trying to get the computer to recognize the printer again if Windows has updated. 2nd Edit: Still working well two years after purchase. I recently bought a new computer running Windows 11 Pro and the computer recognized the printer immediately. A quick software install which I had downloaded from the HP site and it was up and running with no problems. Still connected via USB even although my new computer has wifi as it is generally the easiest install, and I'm the only one using it.

Printers do not come with USB cables. They never have, not for the last 25 years. I bought this printer for its wireless functionality and so far I've tested it across three separate devices: my PC, Android phone & tablet. Each work great via the HP Smart app, I can print documents from anywhere in my home. Set up was a bit finicky, but it I think it was because of my router. After resetting it, the printer connected into my network with little trouble. The scanner is decent. If you try to scan a document using the HP Smart app, it will tell you to sign in to HP's software. You don't need to do this; you can use the Windows' included Scanner & Fax app instead. Overall a decently built, compact multi-function printer

Slow to start, prints fast. It would be annoying if I used to do lot of printing.
