I discovered years ago that I was extremely allergic to DEET. Just a little bit on my skin would cause a pretty bad rash. These days, I can tolerate it better, but I still would rather it not be on my skin or entering my blood stream. When our child was born, my wife became pretty good at making repellant out of essential oils. They were nowhere as effective as DEET-based repellant, but we felt a lot more comfortable spraying it on our child, with a suitable level of dilution. It didn't last nearly as long as DEET (less than 2 hours of effectiveness vs. 6-12 hours), but it was definitely better than nothing. And it's a lot of work buying all the ingredients and mixing them. Hello Bello is of course a popular brand for baby and kids products. I love that they came up with this combination of different essential oils, including citronella, cedarwood, peppermint, and lemongrass. I also love that they're fully transparent with all the ingredients; all of them are ones I recognize and can pronounce, and it's made in the USA. I have zero qualms about using this on my whole family. Regarding application, set your expectations properly; unlike traditional aerosol DEET sprays that comes out as a thin layer of mist, this one comes out sort of as a white foam or cream which you rub on your skin. It smell really nice, kind of lemony, kind of herby. It didn't irritate me at all. To apply it, you need to twist the cap from the lock to the unlock position, and even then it can take a bit of force to push the button. As for the effectiveness, set your expectations properly here too. Of all the oils they use, the citronella and lemongrass are probably the best at messing with mosquitoes' olfactory receptors, which can make it harder for them to detect the CO2 and odors coming from your body. But unlike DEET-based products, you'll need to apply it often, maybe as frequently as once an hour, if you're in an area with light to moderate mosquitoes. If you're in a area with a very heavy concentration of mosquitos, it may not do much good at all. Over the years, I've tended to use a dual approach. I'll use an all-natural product like this directly on my skin, and I'll use a DEET repellant on my clothes (which is actually preferable in some cases not just because you're reducing skin exposure, but also because you're not going to sweat it off...just be careful to avoid synthetics, which the chemicals may damage).

Basically, this spray is citronella scented. I found this spray can container very easy to carry and dispense. Mosquitos are still a bit light right now, but they are out there. So far the kids and wife have no objections to this. I usually go hardcore DEET myself, but typical repellants are an irritant. This product doesn't seem irritating at all, that is, if you don't mind citronella scent. It appears to be effective. No one has complained about a bite yet.

When you live in a place with high humidity and a dog that won’t go outside at night to do her business without you standing there, you know mosquito repellent is something that you need to keep by the door at all times. I’ve pretty much always just use the big name brands that are full of crazy chemicals and probably horrible for you and your skin. I had never once thought about getting one that was all natural And then this one came across my feed! I know citronella sent isn’t for everybody but I personally like it and this does have that sent, but it does not smell like there are a bunch of other unnatural things going on your body. It was pretty warm the last couple nights, so I decided to spray it on While the dog and I did our nightly dance. And I decided to go ahead and throw her ball for her at night just to stay out a little longer to see if I got attacked by mosquitoes. I did not, but I know they were out there because the bug zapper was going bananas. This repellent smells very good. It is a little bit oily and even after washing it sticks with you a little bit the smell that is, but it’s not overwhelming. I’d much rather smell the citronella and the citrus then that big namebrand that smells like you just walked through a vat of chemicals. At the end of the day this stuff seems to work. I can’t wait till we get deeper into the summer Time and let all my family know about this. I do believe I’m gonna stick with it and keep one in the side-by-side and by the front door at all times.e

This pack of mosquito repellent bands will appeal to people who like this type of product, but who are looking for natural ingredients and brand transparency. I appreciate that Hello Bello includes an ingredients list here, instead of just making vague marketing claims about this being non-toxic. The instructions on the back mention that the bands provide about two inches of protection in the area where you are wearing the band, instead of claiming that this will protect you more broadly. The guidelines for usage also mention that the bands should last for about two hours, and would need to be replaced after that. I value that transparency and clarity, in comparison to brands that overstate what product like this are capable of. The bands have good stretch. They will fit kids, as well as adults with small-to-medium-size wrists. The packaging is very secure and contains the smell to keep these fresh for use. After opening the package, people will want to reseal the zipper bag to maintain the bands' freshness.
