Play Video I bought this kalimba for my boyfriend who has been wanting one for a while now. This is perfect for those who are just starting to get into playing it. I didn't want to spend a fortune on a high quality expensive one just in case he'll get bored with it after a couple weeks. So whether that's your situation or if you're a beginner and just want to try it then this is the one for you. The quality is great for the price and it comes with everything that you would need to get started. If you go on youtube you can find easy kalimba songs step by step to practice learning as well as how to tune it and everything else you need to know. So there's really no need to buy a bunch of little booklets for that. It comes with a black bag to put the kalimba and other items in. It also comes with stickers to label the keys. You have to make sure to put them at the top of the keys or else it will mess with its tones. My only grievence is that it came uncovered in its box instead of an Amazon bag or Amazon box. So, thanks for that. 😒 It ruined the surprise Other than that its super cute, and super easy to learn songs. He's only had it for two days and has learned to play bohemian rhapsody. I too enjoy playing with it from time to time. The kalimba in general (not this particular brand or product) is not very loud. don't worry about it being overstimulating or being driven nuts with somebody playing it (like I was.) It's not bad even when someone is playing it poorly. You can barely hear it at all if you're in the next room over and it's easy to tune out. The instrument in general is calming and soothing in my opinion.

I bought this instrument for my son to experiment with during this Covid-19 pandemic. Although he and his wife are fortunate to be able to work from home, it is still a challenge for them (and their children) to observe safety recommendations by staying in their home all the time. Boredom sets in fairly early, which is where the Kalemba comes in. My son plays the guitar, and he has always been interested in learning to play other instruments. So, when I saw this Kalemba and read the reviews, I was certain it would be something my son would get a lot of enjoyment from. And I was right! He absolutely loves it. The night I gave it to him, he immediately started playing around with it, and before I went home that evening, he had learned one of the songs included with it. Something that I’d like to mention is that the sound this Kalemba makes is very soothing — even while the person is learning to play it. No matter which notes you strike, the sound is still pleasant, and it’s soft. In other words, the sounds it makes won’t get on your nerves. The craftsmanship looks very good. The wood is beautiful, and it was already “in tune” when we received it. It does come with a little hammer-type thing to use to tune it as well as full instructions and songs to play. There are also some colored tabs u can stick to the bars which basically just divides them up so that it is easier to find the one you are looking for when you are first learning a song. Each bar is engraved with its note identification. Also, the bars are slightly bent downward to make striking them with your thumb more comfortable. There are thumb covers included which also protect your thumbs. Evidently, a person’s thumbs can get sore if they play the Kalemba a lot — I suppose it’s similar to how a person’s fingers get sore when he is learning to play the guitar. I’m so happy I bought this Kalemba for my son. It has definitely cut the boredom and has given him a new instrument he can play. The great thing about it is that it is easy enough to learn to play that you won’t get frustrated and say “to heck with it.” I think that’s a big plus — especially if you have a low frustration threshold.

Play Video I enjoyed playing this Kalimba for a few days but was not happy with the lack of resonance in the higher tines. They were hard to play (stiff) and flat. I ended up ordering a Quokka Tunes Kalimba and compared the two, making an informed decission to return the Unikko and keep the Quokka Tunes, which has better resonance, feels to be made with better materials, includes a case, a brush and costs a little more. This Kalimba is ok for the price if your budget is tight and you must have one. Although the lower tines emmit a beautiful sound, I did not want to compromise the overall sound for the price. It is very light, making it very portable and you can get a case for it separately. Note that the letter/number stickers shown were purchased separately to increase visibility. The kalimba comes with transparent letters/number sticers. The video is a comparison between the Unikko and Quokka Tunes Kalimbas, tuned to C major.

This instrument exceeded my expectations in two ways: 1. It was a beautiful work of art! Quality wood finish and smooth design. Beautiful! 2. Potential as a playable instrument--not that simple! It has more potential and complication that i expected. I ordered if for a fairly young child--it would have been frustrating for her. But for an older child or adult, this is amazing. Wish I could have used it, but I reluctantly returned it. At times, I'm sorry I returned it, it would have had great potential in the right hands. If you have an older child or adult with musical talent and ability to read music, get this.... you'll enjoy it I'm sure!

Was very surprised at how great this sounds, given how little I spent on it. Would be a lovely gift as it comes with some nice accessories; a bag to keep it in, some 'thumb guards' a book with some simple tunes, and a tuning hammer. Such fantastic value. As I said, the sound is lovely, very relaxing and resonant. Top marks!! :)
