Sir Georg’s vision of Mahler’s Symphony 5, this one recorded in 1970, is a harrowing, intense, terrifying one. Solti is also rather speedy, but there is a tradition of this approach, most notably Bruno Walter and Erich Leinsdorf, even if Solti is much more intense than either of those conductors. While I love this recording for those attribute listed above, I will admit its faults. Its sonics are unusual; one where the winds will be hidden behind the strings, they will come out strongly at the next. The harp is a little tubby in the famous Adagietto and the strings perhaps too thickset. The brass are more strident than cohesive, as they would later be, but it is an exciting ride. Solti’s later recording with the Chicago SO on Decca from the 90s, tames some of these ideas, and many will appreciate it more because of that fact. Yet as an early recording with Chicago and Solti together after coming from London, this 70s one is a prize. Highly Recommended.

Superb, well-recorded for a live performance of the period (which really does mean it's very good!). Kubelik is overlooked of late, but at his best, as he is here, there were few to touch him, and his Mahler was always special. If, like me, you cannot have to many Mahler 5's, this one is superb. with edge-of-the seat playing reminiscent of Tennstedt at his best. There are other approaches - I have always felt that Abbado was more purely "musical," almost in the chamber mode, and Bernstein - especially in the DG/Vienna recording contains barely-controlled angst and passion. I wouldn't be without both of them - or the Tennsedt. Where are such conductors now?

A great recording of Mahler's Symphony No. 5. This is the better of the two versions recorded by Solti and the Chicago Symphony. I will quote the reviewer David Hurwitz, who said, "The first version was fast and exciting. The second version was fast and less exciting". I recommend this first version.

This vinyl is trash. Music is great but vinyl itself is way to noisy even after a thorough cleaning. For the cost of this I expected music without noise.

The performance was excellent. The quality of the vinyl record was not. I have a "VPI" Cyclone record cleaning machine, and I gave it a really good cleaning before the first time I played it. Lots more surface noise than should be on a new record. I previously got the Mahler 2 from this series, and it was excellent. Maybe I got the proverbial lemon.

I know there are dozens of really great Mahler 5th's out there... But Kubelik never got the recognition he deserved, and this disc should finally make the case for him as a truly masterful interpreter of Mahler's work. This 5th has all the color, organization, and feeling of the 1970 studio recording. The orchestra plays with even more blazing virtuosity however, and the performance itself explores the work's expressive extremes with riveting breadth and power. The outer movements project massive energy and drama. the scherzo contains some brilliant individual and emsemble playing from the winds; and , at about 10:30, the Adagietto is sensuous but not a series of static episodes. The transition fom the Adagietto to the Rondo-Finale is in fact the finest I have ever heard, the orch. players really playing off of each other with stunning clarity. This was a live Bavarian Radio Broadcast. The balances are beautifully done with a genuine 'balcony seat' perpective. The sound image is recessed by current digital standards so maximum clarity, especially in densely scored passages, is sacrficed. Solo passages sound fabulous however, and when the whole band kicks in at climaxes... If you don't know Kubelik's work, this will be a discovery. If, like me, you already have too many Mahler 5th's, isn't this the performance you have been searching for???

It's a well made vinyl record with great sound. Usually Mahler's No. 5 symphony was recorded into 3 sides of 2 plates. Unusually this album was recorded into full 4 sides. The quality is likely better.

Clean and strong performance but some would say more passion is called for. The orchestral plays exceptionally well. I loved the disc. It comes with a red rubber anti vibration stick on that audiophiles like me used, but will not play in a car CDP.

Reverb is good, but lacks punch and so is Mahler's faithful sterile feel to the music

The Mahler has not arrived yet....but I am sure it will be 5* if and when it does arrive
