I loved Onyx Storm, and I can't wait for the next book! Yarrow's writing continues to be a highlight – she has this amazing knack for balancing humor and really touching moments. In fact, I even teared up a few times – the emotional punches really landed! I especially loved learning more about the dragons and their ideology, and seeing Violet and Xaden's love story continue to develop. The book also does a great job depicting the corrupting influence of power. And, of course, I have to mention Broccoli – you'll know what I mean when you read it!
Now, while I thoroughly enjoyed Onyx Storm, there were a couple of things I noticed. I did find myself wishing there was more representation of Violet's chronic illness. As a hypermobility girlie myself, I so feel for her, and I think that aspect of her experience could have been explored further for the future. Also, I noticed that some pivotal moments and plans happen behind the scenes, so I wasn't always clued in on Violet's motivations or actions. It made certain parts a little tricky to follow initially, but I suspect it will all make perfect sense on a second read. Onyx Storm definitely felt like a bridge book, laying a lot of groundwork for the future. I spent the first chunk of the book getting my bearings with new characters and locations, and exploring more of the world's history. Honestly, it took me a little while to really get into it, and the initial setup was a tad confusing. But once I found my footing? Things started to click, and the story really took off. The rest of the book was captivating.
But honestly, those small things didn't detract from my overall enjoyment. This book definitely expands the lore and plot in exciting ways, and I can't wait to see what happens next!

The excitement, the magic, the battles and love story all come together to create such a scene in your head that it’s like a movie unfolding as you read. Her characters are incredibly personable and realistic, with diseases and handicaps and different lifestyles all being accepted and normal.
The book opens up where iron flame left off (stop reading if you haven’t read iron flame or do not want to know anything about onyx storm) with Xaden having turned Venin and Violet being Violet who wants to save the world, determined to save him too. Xaden is safer behind the wards at Basgaith so he does everything he can to stay even if that ends up creating a new complication to his and Violets relationship.
Dark magic wielders seem to pop up everywhere throughout the book keeping you constantly at the edge of your seat waiting for the next attack or problem to arise.
Andarna desperately wants to know where she’s from and what happened to her family and Violet will do everything she can to help her while also fighting to find the cure for Xaden. Traveling all over the continent and isles to find answers, Violet and her crew of riders and flyers are faced with some hard choices and disappointments with what seems like little reward and not the answer they were needing to hold on to hope. But we do learn more about Andarna which was a big question as the end of iron flame.
We also discover what Violets second signet is. We learn a lot more about the Venin, their power and what they are capable of doing. We do end with a cliffhanger, in true RY form but it has quite the twist to it!
The series isn’t complete so no HEA is guaranteed but there aren’t any love triangles or cheating and our hero and heroine are together for Onyx Storm.
Book: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Spice: 🌶️🌶️🌶️
Butterflies: 🦋🦋🦋🦋🦋
Slight downside: book was a little warped but I think it was because of how the publisher shipped the books. It is flattening from being in my bookshelf pressed between other books.

Stars -
5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️- Excellent - Highly Recommended
4 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ - A good, solid read
3 ⭐️⭐️⭐️ - An okay read
2 ⭐️⭐️ - Meh
1 ⭐️ - Not my cup of tea
"To the ones who don’t run with the popular crowd, the ones who get caught reading under their desks, the ones who feel like they never get invited, included, or represented. Get your leathers. We have dragons to ride."
This one is tough for me to review because Onyx Storm took me on a ride—one that was exhilarating at times and frustrating at others.
Let’s break it down.
📖 The first 10% – Solid start. It pulled me back into the world, set the stage for what was to come, and had me excited to see where the story would go.
📖 The middle 50% – This is where I struggled. The pacing dragged, and the introduction of so many new characters and places felt overwhelming. I love a good expansion of world-building, but parts of this felt like unnecessary detours rather than meaningful additions. There were moments when I just wanted to push through to get back to the heart of the story.
📖 The last 40% – WOW. The payoff was worth it. The emotional intensity, the revelations, the action—I flew through the final stretch and found myself completely hooked again. There were moments that genuinely hit me hard, and yes, a few tears were shed.
One of the highlights for me was Ridoc. His humor was much needed, especially during the slower parts of the book. He added that perfect balance of lightheartedness in an otherwise heavy and intense story, and I really came to love his character.
As much as parts of this book frustrated me, the ending has me locked in for the rest of the series. I know I’ll be reading the next books, and I’ll likely do a full re-read before Book 4 to see if the middle reads better the second time around.
Overall, Onyx Storm wasn’t a perfect read, but it had its moments of brilliance. If you love dragons, high-stakes magic, and a slow-burn, emotional punch, it’s still worth picking up.
“I could reach the rank of Maven, lead armies of dark wielders against everyone we care for, and watch every vein in my body turn red as I channel all the power in the Continent, and I would still love you. What I did doesn’t change that. I’m not sure anything can.”
Final Verdict: Stick through the slow parts—by the end, you’ll be glad you did.

A pesar de las diferentes opiniones que escuché a mi si me gusto el libro, y si me hubiera encantado que se extendiera más en las explicaciones acerca de este mundo, si sentí que pasa rápido perooo aun así lo disfruté mucho.

Onyx Storm is hands down my favourite of the Empyrean Series so far. There is SO much that happens that keeps you hooked on this emotional Rollercoaster from the very first to last page.
The content of the book is a 5 star for me, HOWEVER, the production is a 3 star. The page quality is standard and the sprayed edges are beautiful, however BOTH of my copies have warped covers that do not shut seamlessly. There was mention this could be due to weather, but none of the hacks have worked, and the way it's angled when closed makes it seem like the cover actually just wasn't cut properly.
All my love to RY, but unfortunately both of my physical copies had minor defects.

I read once again first and second book of the Empyrean before starting this one … a week ago pretty difficult to work and take care of your family when you can’t possibly drop a book! ;-) . So it starts according to my expectation and then there is so many loop around the story that I am still amazed Alert spoiler: Noooo we want Xaden back !!!! Can’t wait for the 4th one thanks for this wonderful story
