Stellar graphic novel taken from the author's own experiences travelling in the region. A masterpiece. A must read. a combination of journalism, creative art, personal journeys et al. As the author writes, "That the book itself still has relevance is a sorry testament to the enduring tragedy of the Palestinians – though, in some ways, it’s also a tribute to their fortitude, their unwillingness to give in.".

I've had this graphic novel for years, but continue to buy it as gift for friends and family who love Palestine, history, and graphic novels. It's beautifully illustrated, and an excellent autobiographical account of the author's experiences in Palestine during the first Intifada. Highly recommend.

A very different lens on the Palestinian/Israeli Conflict.

I'd just like to echo what so many other reviewers have said - such as how people will gain a deeper understanding of the Palestinian's struggle, and that we should buy two copies of "Palestine" and give one away. I actually bought an additional copy that's in Spanish and sent it to a library in Mexico. The way Joe Sacco describes life and his own experience in the Occupied Territories is captivating, and the drawings are fantastic. When he came out with this graphic novel, there were very few voices who would dare to say something sympathetic toward Palestinians. Now, with books like Jimmy Carter's "Palestine: Peace not Apartheid" and the work of Noam Chomsky reaching a global audience, Sacco's compassion is more mainstream. For analysis of how the Palestinian's struggle was mischaracterized for so long, I'd suggest the DVD "Peace, Propaganda, and the Promised Land." And for people who are interested in the "graphic" novel format, I'd also highly recommend "Wobblies!: A Graphic History of the Industrial Workers of the World" edited by Paul Buhle and Nicole Schulman.

A riveting story of the Palestinian people in Gaza and the West Bank in 1991 and 1992. However book is missing last 11 pages.

Well written, interesting and informative read to get a basic idea of what happened and clues to what is happening presently.

What a great way to learn about Palestine and their plight! Through the observations of an outsider, in comic book form. My 16 yr old devoured it, and my husband keeps stealing it off my night stand. Even my 12 yr old is interested in this book. We live in a very pro-Israeli community, and I was raised to accept everything I had been told about Israel and the Palestinian people. I’ve come a long way in the past year! It’s nice to have such a thorough and clear alternative view-point to present my family.

Life in Palistine revealed graphically

Joe Sacco is so amazingly amazing, every single instant, in his works, looks like. Atleast so far he has not yet let his reader down with works like The Fixer, Palenstine et al. This is again, a 'graphic novel journalism' at it's best. After reading 'The Complete Maus', Art Spiegelman's classic graphic novel on a holocaust surviver's (his dad!) tale, this is the fist time that I encountered sheer illustrative reporting talent yet another time, in Joe Sacco's Palenstine. And what an irony that while Maus tells the horrifying tale of how a community that was harassed to the extreme, Palestine is the exact reverse of the coin where the victim of Maus is the same community that is the oppressor of horrifying proportions in the Palestine tale. Such a sad tale of human mind gone all twisted and wrong, more through racistic ideals & hatred in the first case, and through affecation of centuries old past & greed to usurp the brother humans' basic rights & properties, in the second. At least a lesson on what one must not do, if one through lack of luck finds oneself as the 'stronger one'! Another tale of the strong oppressing the weak, to the extremes. In graphic novels world it's Maus, Dalai Lama, Palestine - must read, all three! Another pure nonfiction that jilts your sense of fairness & justice. Wonder, when these tales of horror ever end on this earth & will it ever?! Must read for newspaper & nonfiction lovers & a delight for graphic novel lovers too. These 3 works are especially relevant in 2015, when India governance has changed hands and people at the top are now reconsidering which idealogy to side with, like on Tibet vs China, Israel vs Palestine... wish much that, India stood more by the oppressed, again, as the country's past has no oppression that she initiated herself & she has indeed undergone oppression many times & knows the pain of racism & marginalisation of people in their own country. Summary: It's rare to find a master journalist who can do such fabulous illustrations in addition to his humorous masterpieve reporting of real life tales - it's Joe Sacco all the way. He's definitely up there, on standards, at par with Art Spiegelman himself!

It’s like being there. Joe Sacco captures Palestine and Palestinians in a way that gems from Khalidi, Pappe and others aren’t able to. Sacco uses the graphic novel format supremely well. He’s a compelling and credible narrator.
