Multiple cats don't have an issue sharing water from a Drinkwell (unlike sharing other things). These charcoal cartridges make the water seem fresh to them for a long time. Yes, you need to put one in a bowl of water and let the loose carbon float off before using. That's not very hard. I do that while taking apart the Drinkwell pieces and cleaning off cat hair and whatever else off the unit before reassembling with the new filter. I gave this five stars, but I have never drunk from it, so can't vouch for how good the water tastes. But it's the preferred drinking spot for out felines, and have many years experience using countless filters. The authentic Drinkwell filters are best, and Amazon sells them at a good price.

a-ok...works with the fountain I have. Filters pretty well . leaves a black carbon residue at first, so it might be good to wash it first. Not harmful, just have to clean out the fountain after a couple of days. It's carbon from the charcoal filter.

These filters provide long lasting clean clear water for my 4 cats - they love their water. I have 2 large water dispensers in my home. I replace the filters every 3-4 weeks.

These work exactly the same as the ones I used to buy originally. Easy to get these online & have so I can replace them regularly. One trick on the Drinkwell’s is that I saved the parts that are used to add the parts that hold the jar of extra water so it can fill itself for some days. They do not sell these any longer. I also bought an extra PetSafe Drinkwell in case they stop making them. These last for years. I’ve had them over 20+ years & only once did the motor go out on one. So one of these days I’ll need to order more of these filters also!

Have used these since I purchased the Drinkwell Fountain some years ago. They work really well but I rinse them every few days. We have a problem with black slime forming in the motor of the cat fountain every two or three weeks, the filters prevent it from getting in the water in case we don't notice it quickly enough. and can't figure out why as we have a filter at the main and also kitchen and bathroom.
