Bought this to add my shed to my Ring alarm system. Works great for that purpose. I installed it on the inside of the shed doors so any intruders don’t even see that it is attached to my alarm system.

I bought these to go with my Ring alarm system and to be placed on my wood fence gate. They are about twice the size of the Ring indoor sensors and come with a mount, and you can slide the sensors out to replace the batteries. We installed them with minimal issues on our wood gate door. The problem was when our weekly landscapers let the gate shut, they sensors would fly off. We noticed they were showing open when the gate was closed and found them in a nearby flowerbed. After the second time this happened, I added some duct tape to attach them to the mounting piece a little better and they have stayed put. They are a little pricey, but they work well once you figure out how to attach them properly and securely. I like getting notified when my gate opens and being able to check the app to confirm that the gate is shut. If you worry about your gates, it might be worth trying them if you already have a Ring alarm system. I do not know if they work just by having the doorbell or if you need the alarm system.

Like really big compare to the indoor gen 2 sensors. But, size isn’t everything is it? I hope not. But they work, I have waited a bit to submit this to see if performed overtime. I used to have an aqara zigbee sensor under the gate. Honestly it worked but would fall off every now and then. Since it was under the fence it had much more wide appeal than this thing. I can’t over state how much bigger this thing is than I expected. I installed it on the back of the gate fully exposed to the elements. This thing has been a trooper and not failed once through winter in the PNW and now into Summer (well less rainy weather). I connected this directly in Home Assistant using Zwavejs2mqtt (not connected to Ring Hub at all). I use it just like any other zwave connected sensor on Home Assistant. It’s responsive and I haven’t had any issues triggering notifications when the gate is opened/closed or left open. Even though it’s not as hidden as the aqara contact sensor. I much rather this ginormous (design principles taking from the square 80s) sensor from Ring. PS - I actually have no idea how it actually performs with the ring hub though ;)

The way these brackets are attached aren't the most reliable and tend to slip off over time. Needs a better clip at the end to ensure they do not come off. I've lost one of my connectors already.

These Ring outdoor contact sensors are a great addition to the Ring security system. When I realized the need for sensors on my backyard gates I was happy to discover that Ring offers these sensors for gates. They are quick and easy to add to the system but as a word of caution be sure you have a solid and reliable WiFi signal at the outdoor location where you will be installing the sensors. If your wi-fi is A-OK, the sensors install quickly with a bracket and screws. Just make sure your gate closure is solid and doesn’t flex in the wind. Highly recommend! Two thumbs up! 👍🏼👍🏼 I hope this review was helpful! 😋

Facts, No FluffReviewed in the United States on January 21, 2025

Facts no Fluff: + Zwave sensor works very well + Works with SmartThings + Distance is about 900ft from the main hub, though there are additional zwave devices between to repeat signal + The sensor is slightly large due to 2 AA batteries but the benefit will be long life hopefully and are easy to replace and buy - the Magnet side of the sensor is thin and the magnet itself does not snap securely to the mounting base. +- to fix this, I put a support block of wood next to the magnet so it won't easily slide off. There should almost be no reason to remove the magnet once you install the sensor. - Because it easily removes from the mounting plate, this might cause the magnet to accidentally fall off which would be bad if it triggers alarms. (I believe other reviews allude to the same thing, having the magnet fall off) I would buy another knowing how well the zwave works, smartthings compatibility and its weather resistant design. Ring needs to redesign the housing. - - - Update 2/24 Found the large side of sensor almost falling off it's mount, assuming this is just from the gate opening and closing. The snaps are just not strong enough. I'll need to place something behind it as well. ++ Amazon customer service reached out to get more detail about this review. I appreciate that they do this. Still 3 stars, the sensor works but the mounting system is pretty bad.

I'm thrilled with the Ring Alarm Outdoor Contact Sensor! Setting it up was a breeze. The instructions were straightforward, and the app guided me through the process. The sensor's performance is top-notch. It reliably detects any activity around my outdoor entry points and sends instant alerts to my phone. This added layer of security brings peace of mind. Durability is impressive. It's built to withstand the elements, and it's held up perfectly through rain and varying temperatures. I appreciate the battery life; it's been months and it's still going strong. Plus, replacing the battery was a cinch. As part of my whole Ring security system, this sensor is a great addition. It seamlessly integrates with other Ring devices, expanding my home security network. In a nutshell, Ring Alarm Outdoor Contact Sensor is a must-have. Easy to set up, dependable, and durable. For anyone looking to enhance their home security, especially within a Ring ecosystem, this is a fantastic investment!

We installed this to monitor our garage overhead door, as seen in the photo (which may be hard to understand). The smaller half of the sensor, on the left, is rotated 1/4 turn so it would fit, and is attached to the door. The part on the right is on the frame. The smaller white contact sensors aren’t rated for cold winter temperatures, so we bought this one. This configuration has been working perfectly so far (for 9 weeks and counting) and it works WAY better than our old alarm system sensor which used an accelerometer and was slow or didn’t recognize when garage opened/closed at all. It has been below -30C (-22F) for days and was down to -38C (-36F) overnight these past few days. About as cold as it can get! I was concerned this sensor may fail because of the temperature rating. This sensor isn’t directly outside but it must be -18C (0F) inside our garage. The sensor has been working A-OK, even when the overhead door is open and the sensor is more exposed to the frigid cold. As a result, I would fully recommend this for cold climates, if used like we are doing (in a garage for an overhead door). If using the sensor strictly outdoors, fully exposed, like in a gate or shed in the winter, I might be more wary. It is technically only rated down to -20C (-4F). For climates that are warmer year-round, I feel this sensor would be a terrific purchase. ----- Other notes: - For use on a garage door, make sure all snow is cleared under the door. With just a bit of caked snow under the garage door, the sensor wouldn’t register as closed. - Keep in mind this sensor is larger than the white indoor ones. If you are using in a narrow space you may want to measure carefully first. - We also found the tamper sensor a bit finicky. Once the baseplate behind the large half of the sensor was attached, and we slid the unit back together again, it would still register tampered. We hadn't screwed the baseplate on overly tight, but we had to loosen it until a delicate threshold where the sensor would register as being properly assembled again. It sounds like others have had similar problems with the assembly of this product.

I was very iffy on these. Not because of the product or brand, I’m a big fans of the Ring brand. I was iffy as my house is a WiFi dead zone and barley get signal in my yard. I am currently using 2 Ring range extenders. The gate sensor i new would work but the shed sensor I was expecting to have significant signal issues as it 50+ feet away. To my surprise, both are working without issues. My only negative would be that I find the casing on these need to be more secure and less temperamental on the tampered button.
