This book is a modern day "Book of Five Rings". Dr. Morris explains his perceptions of life, training and the development of self in simple and pragmatic terms. He has the demeanor of the friendly neighbor that lives next to you. "Path Notes", to me, was a pretty raw and almost gritty rendition of Dr. Morris's perspective of training in Ninjutsu, meditation, etc. In "Shadow Strategies" you see the clear evolution of life strategy and the encouragement introspection that his teaching method has evolved into. Where "Path Notes" climaxes with his brutal Kundalini Awakening, Shadow Strategies explains how this Awakening is integrated into day to day life. I actually picked up Path Notes, after I read the title, because I thought it was another "Ninja-Death-Shoruken (complete with flaming fist)-kill-you-in-ten-easy-steps" type of book that was so prevalent in a lot of books that discussed Ninjutsu. It was and is one of the best books on personal development I have read and "Shadow Strategies" is no exception. This is the third time I have purchased this book; first one was destroyed and I lost the last one. Several years ago Soke Dr. Glenn Morris passed away. I exchanged one email years ago with him regarding if there was any teachers of his system (Hoshinjutsu) in WA and he sent me back a couple sentence response. I regret that I did not correspond with him more. Since his passing, as what happens with a lot of systems with a dynamic leader, his system has divided into factions. His books are probably the closest thing that one can find to understand exactly how Dr. Glenn Morris saw the world and taught his students. As far as I am aware, this book has not been continued by its original publisher. If you have a opportunity to get your hands on it, I would encourage it.

Was in very good condition...almost like new. Plus, Soke Morris's level of insight provides deeper understanding of more than just Ninpo.

I just finished reading Dr. Glenn Morris's trilogy--Path Notes of an American Ninja Master; Shadow Strategies of an American Ninja Master; and Martial Arts Madness: A Users Guide to the Esoteric Martial Arts--and was very impressed with the scope of material covered by this enlightened warrior. I wish I had been able to meet this man. If the phrase "warrior of light" is more than just another new-age phrase to you; if your martial arts includes (or you wish it did), qigong, the secret smile, the kundalini awakening process, dim mak, healing, energy manipulation, intuition, instructions on how to create an inner sanctuary complete with psychic guard dogs; if you like your martial arts sprinkled liberally with cross-cultural religious, spiritual, mystical and magical gems; then these three books are a great place to begin. Re-read this book recently after about 20 years. It was just as fun now as it was then! Highly recommended! Good for developing academics and martial artists as well as meditators of all levels.

Master Morris' writings are beyond helpful and I find his language and writing style easily comprehended.

Great book, more than just a book about about martial arts or techniques. It gets pretty deep, even into the spiritual.

this and path notes are probably the most important and influential books i've read on the esoteric subjects of spirituality, meaning, self-exploration, enlightenment, kundalini, meditation, and the mysteries of life. If you seek you shall find; reading Glenn's books will take you one step closer.

Glenn Morris provided a rather vague guide for his students, offering a strange mix of personal stories and insights that definitely set him apart from all other writers of ninjutsu info. However, it was neither clear cut nor specific (likely presenting the same tone and lack of focus that has lead to his interpretation of ninjutsu splintering in the way that it has since his death). Although the information is insightful and witty, it is in no way practical, pulling many ninjutsu aspirants even further away from the essential basics that Masaaki Hatsumi has been trying to present to the public for the last 20 years or so (through his Bujinkan Budo Taijutsu). So, although it depicts a different interpretation of the shinobi way, it is in no manner something that should be presented to novices in the art, as it would completely distract them from the spirit and focus so important early in the practice.

A rambling but interesting read for anyone interested in martial arts in general, ninja practices particularly. Morris goes off on tangents at every opportunity covering everything from weapons and empty hand training to dreamwork and crystal's. You could criticise Morris on almost every subject he raises but one thing you cannot pull him up on is his enthusiasm, which is to say the least infectious.

This book really changed my life. This, and Path Notes (Which should be read before this, really). Glenn was a great guy, and it's partly because of him that I took an interest in Hoshin. 5/5 would recommend to everybody because meditation is like really good for you.

Resonating opinions, light hearted approach and interesting facts or topics to think about. I really enjoy Glenn Morris' books.
