Been a Cure fan since 1985; saw them on the Kiss Me tour and nearly every other tour since (Great Woods on the Disintegration tour, up front for both shows -torrential rain and unforgettable). Bought every album on the release date and I am one of those fans that loves every song they have ever written.
In short, this album is a requiem and I have mixed feelings about it:
likes:
Pensive lyrics with the appropriate dark music and great song writing to accompany them.
It's a Cure album and I love this band.
I like requiems (think Mozart). Be prepared.
Dislikes.
The Cure is at its core a guitar band. Simon's bass and Robert's bass VI / electric guitar melodies are there but sparse or too often lost in the mix.
Every song feels like it was recorded with Pro Tools and is locked to the grid. The organic, natural swing and rhythm that the band is capable of seems to be missing.
Bittersweet as this may be their last.
Of course I would always want more. But nothing lasts forever. Robert knows what he is doing though and if this is his offering at this late stage of his life I will gladly take it.

I was blown away by this album. Every, and I do mean EVERY, song on this album is amazing while the album itself maintains a coherency. The music is much more in the vein of Disintegration and Bloodflowers (my two favorites) and is one of the best works they have ever recorded. This is not a "For 65 years old, it's not bad." NO, Robert Smith sounds like classic Robert Smith, the music is incredible, and the lyrics are stunning. It sounds like it might have been made during the period of Disintegration, other than it's lyrics come from a more mature person looking back. Just incredible.

This album took 16 years to make. I heard 3 of the songs when I saw them in June 23. It takes me back to Desintergration and Pornography. Yes the production and sounds are a little rough, bit I think that is intentional. There isn't anything lite and fluffy, it is heart wrenching to listen to Robert singing about his brothers death. It is one of the best from The Cure

The Cure's catalog is LEGENDARY: Head on the Door, Standing on the Beach / Staring at the Sea, Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Disintegration, Wish, and more. Songs of a Lost World stands beside them with its own identity and a towering presence. It is AT LEAST the equal of those albums, and in many cases, the material reaches above their best offerings. This accomplishment, during the final 1/4 of their career is astonishing, and it brings a renewed appreciation for Robert Smith and the dedication to his craft - he's as good as he's ever been.
We are the winners here. This isn't an album that you listen to once and you have it figured out - it's an album that gloriously reveals more to you with each listen.
This is The Cure's first album in 16 years, and it just might form a resurgence of songwriting later this decade. For now, let's just enjoy this incredibly sweet moment.
This is as good as it gets.

8 dark songs in a row. Majestic, like a b/w horror movie, sad, elegiac, moving, depressing, honest. Still, this is a heavy album not for everyone. Death is the central theme as RS experienced more than his share since the last album. A must have for Cure diehard fans. I'm ok with this one. Awaiting the next two albums that are reportedly more up beat and near completion.

The album itself is a solid win, the most complete outing IMO for Robert Smith and the band since Bloodflowers. Wonderfully morose music, perfect for doing chores outside in the dark in the rain.
I'm not a fan of the paper CD holder. Sure it's fully biodegradable. But the way the booklet comes out is counter-intuitive (pages first instead of spine first) and I managed to rip it as I tried to get the booklet out. Booklet / liner notes are nice and complete, very black and white throughout.
Biggest bummer was that I thought by buying the CD was that I could have full access to the digital copy on Amazon Music. That's not the case unless I paid to upgrade that service as well. Maybe that was a feature that Amazon had when buying CDs ages ago that pre-dated the Amazon Music service, I don't know. I'll keep this copy in the car CD player and use the YT streaming concert of the album when on the go since the Amazon app doesn't let me play this album start-to-finish.
Great album, enjoying it all so far!!!

When I was 18 and walked into Cats Records store and heard The Head On The Door blasting from the store speakers.. I was never the same again.
The Cure has been the backdrop of my life for nearly 40 years. Every album release seemingly in sync with whatever I was going through at the time.
And this Songs Of A Lost World is no exception.
It’s a beautifully orchestrated love letter about grief.. loss of what was.. and the passage of time.
Its darkly gorgeous vulnerability reaches into the heart and doesn’t let go.
And I never want it to.

I will be honest, the last two albums released by The Cure left much to be desired, each only offering one or two songs that resonated with me. This fact and also the fact that it's been 16 years since they've released any music, contributed to my expectations for this album to be low. I am delighted to find that this album blew away all of my expectations. Songs of a Lost World is a wonderful album from start to finish. Every song is dripping with the very essence of The Cure that I grew to love way back in the 80's and 90's. Thank you, Robert Smith and crew, for this absolute gem of an album.

Well worth the 16 year wait. Another Cure classic and one of their best. Melancholic, Sad, Majestic, Magnificent. This could only have been written by someone mature and who has lived life and experienced loss. Every song is prefaced by an instrumental intro that establishes the mood. Robert Smith is now a master songwriter and craftsman. He has stated that another album is almost finished and has enough songs for a third. Let's hope that they are of the same standard set by this magnum opus. This is not a pop album but a true work of art. Every listen makes me emotional.

Era impensable que a estas alturas de su carrera, con todo demostrado ya, volvieran a sacar uno de los mejores discos que han firmado.
