I usually find that electronics that have some weight to them tend to be of much better quality. On first impression this seemed a bit "hollow" to me. It doesn't come with a battery which is not surprising for the cost, but I always replace those that have "batteries included" with my own high end li ion batteries anyway. It lit up like it should. Felt better with a battery installed as far as weight goes. So then the testing started. First I will try it without instructions to see how user friendly it is. Placed it on a wall in which I knew was difficult to read with my old SF. I toggled through the modes and found it kind of interestingly confusing as to why it would have different depth settings. It found nothing on 1/2". Reset it to 1" and found nothing again. Then on 1-1/2" it found studs. It found the centers well. Then I tried it on an easy to sense wall. Same thing. the 1-1/2" works. I don't see why they would bother with the lighter settings. But it did accurately find the stud centers on the 1-1/2" mode. In fact it found them much easier than my old clunker which tended to error out. I call it my old clunker because this should be able to clunk around inside a drawer until needed and take the abuse. I'm not sure how well this one will hold up as I just got it. My old clunker cost much less and lasted me many years. 8 years from now I can tell you how this one does, but for now I have no review of that. Don't get me wrong. I take care of my tools. I don't abuse them. This one will be my go to stud finder until such a time it fails me without abuse. It seems relatively easy to use. You should not need to pull out an instruction manual every time you wish to use a tool. This did not require me to do any such thing. I could figure it out without problems. I just have to remember that it needs to calibrate first. So all that said, I am happy with the purchase and I think it is a quality tool for the price as long as you don't abuse it. It's made to read walls, not bounce off them. For the price, I'd try it if I were you and didn't need a $400 radar scanning tool, which you "would" have to treat like a fragile piece of glass. I rather like it.

Our home has exterior vinyl siding. Years ago, I mounted a piece of 3/4" plywood about 18" square on which to hang our garden hose. At that time, I could not locate any studs in the area, so I just used 2" long deck screws to secure the board. That worked ok for a few years, but gradually the weight of the water-filled hose started pulling the siding away from the wall. Before that became a much bigger problem, I decided it was time to make a new mounting board that was screwed into at least two studs. The problem was that I could not locate the studs. I tried several methods. First I tried my 20+ year-old Zircon stud finder. It works pretty well on interior walls, but not on exterior walls that are too deep in the wall. Next I tried a powerful Neodymium magnet hanging from a thin string. That method has worked well for finding interior studs by locating the nail heads, but I had no luck on this exterior wall where the studs are set back about 3/4" - 1" from the surface of the siding. I even used an infrared camera on a cold night. Sometimes the studs will show up because they are warmer than the siding. This "almost" worked - I could vaguely see the locations of the studs, but when I drilled some test holes I did not strike wood. I even tried using the stud finder on the interior side of the wall opposite where I wanted to mount the hose. I found the studs, but had to make assumptions about the offsets from the edges of the wall inside vs. outside. Again, no luck after drilling several test holes. So I searched Amazon for a new stud finder. My hope was that more modern versions may be sensitive enough to locate studs 1" deep in the wall. As soon as the new stud finder arrived, I did a series of tests on interior walls where I already knew where the studs were located. It passed those tests with ease. I took it out to where I wanted to mount the hose, and, at first, had no luck. After reading the user manual (for me, always a last resort (-: ) I found that I could change the depth sensitivity. Wow, to my surprise, the scanner quickly located the studs! Drilling a few test holes confirmed that it even accurately located the stud centers. So after hours of frustration, I now had a quick and reliable solution. I was able to get the job done and move on to the next one. This stud finder has earned a permanent place in my toolbox. When I find time, I plan to replace the mounting board with a bigger one that completely covers the 1x2s used to span the studs.

great product, seems pretty accurate. I tested a few spots where I knew there would be electricity and AC and it quickly picked up on both. Also did not have a problem finding studs, I'm very happy with the product!

Product arrived quickly and with battery included. Easy to set up and could work out how to use without even reading instruction booklet. Tested on 1/2" and 1" studs and found every time. Tested on electrical wiring and found no problem - if anything a little too sensitive and could detect wiring from 6" away. Tested on metal joists and metal pipe and found no problem. No function for plastic pipes. Metal joists and studs, perfect and can really line up where they are. Wiring gives an approximate of where they are. At this price i really can't fault it.
