When it comes to Mahler, one usually thinks BIG, bombastic, heavily orchestrated, and highly emotional. The genius Joolz Gale has forsaken none of the emotionality of the symphony, but has pared down the orchestration to a chamber-sized group, with extraordinary results. I heard swatches of music that I'd never heard before, and I've been a Mahler freak all my life. HIGHLY recommended!

The concept is intriguing, the recording brilliant, but alas the magic and mystery is sadly lacking .There seems to be no coherent rhythmic drive or swing and the pulse sags dreadfully particularly in the ländler, listen instead to the wonderful Rafael Kubelik or the atmospheric Bruno Walter or Klemperer. It was an expensive novelty and will be abandoned.
