We had previously purchased a TP-Link RE315, but it was beginning to fail with frequent connection drops. Had it for quite a while, so we did at least get good use out of it. Kind of turned out to be a good thing the old one died. This RE605X is a much superior unit. With the RE315, it could only relay - at best - 120 Mbs on a 400 Mbs connection. This one does about 220 Mbs. Which is actually very good for most any single, non mesh device. This RE605X also has much greater range. Sitting only about 30 feet away from the old RE315, the 2.4 GHz band was weak, and the 5 GHz band was almost nonexistent. With this unit, even the 5 GHz connection shows full bars on our devices. My three star rating doesn't have anything to do with TP-Link. I didn't need their help to set up the extender, so a full five stars would be meaningless, as would one star. In this case, three simply means neutral.

Im a systems engineer and have been working with stuff like this for a while. Basically, I know what I am doing. I replaced my previous router of about 5 years (TP Link cs5400) with the TP Link AX11000 because it was 5 years old - not because I needed to. Anyway, I have dead spots in my house and contemplated a MESH system (Orbi RBK) but decided on the TP Link because I like the interface and my last router was pretty rock solid (It needed an occasional reboot). I know for a fact that this range extender is weak in the 2.4 GHz band because I previously purchased the TP Link 2600 Range extender (RE650) and returned it because the RE605X is newer. The TP Link 2600 got much more range and the included tools proved it. Ill keep the RE605X because it does solve my problems, but newer products should always be "bigger, better, faster". This range extender is really a step backwards for 2.4 GHz channels. I will say this range extender works pretty awesome with the TP Link AX11000 and the mobile app is pretty slick. You have to love technology, right?

Great improvement for our home wifi coverage. If you are looking at this item you know that typical home construction and distance can block weaken the wifi signal from one's modem/source. Our internet provider installed the modem in upstairs office so on first floor the signal was weak. So we got this device and plugged it into wall socket in best 1st floor location to extend the signal. All's good now. Reliable connection happens more often not counting the signal strength from internet provider.

Simple setup and easy to install. I put this in my office room upstairs for some reasons my Mac was picking 2.4 from my router and the strength was just around 7mbps... Ane causing issues and laggy as my net speed is 300 over 300. After searching found this .. was planning to go with google but then wanted to try simple extender and found this... Once I got this and it started emiting both signals and my Mac and upstairs is picking 5ghz and signal strength went from 7 to 150 which was way better and no more lagging or drop.. Worth every penny.

As for deadspots, this will help get you WIFI connectivity. However devices connected through this will suffer roughly a 50% drop in speeds from what you could get normally if you were close to your wifi router. This is pretty common for extenders, go do your research on the web and you'll see this is the case. I returned this and just moved my router to improve the signal where I wanted and got way faster speeds. This is the 2nd TP link extender I've tried too. Across Mac and windows and android phones/computers. True mesh systems which are expensive and still not the best technology is the only real way to ensure quality fast extended wifi range. I work in I.T. so this isn't user error. I honestly didn't do my homework before buying these knowing that impact, shame on me. To ensure it wasn't a signal issue I placed this extender anywhere from 1 foot to over 30 feet from my router testing on all types of devices, made zero difference speeds were shopped in half. Firmware was up to date on it along with the computers drivers/FW and OS versions. If people are claiming they are getting 1GB down on a 1GB plan by connecting to this, I'm curious how that was done. Unless I got two bad units, which I doubt. TPLink came highly rated on other sites so I tried it, even though to me TPLink is a garbage company for network related hardware. Oh well that's what returns are for! Getting over 850MBs down now with my wifi router relocated and not using any extender.

So first the bad: -Automatic firmware updates don't work out of the box, download directly from the TP-Link site -Latest firmware has some UI issues -OneMesh is SEVERELY disappointing, doesn't work at all in AP mode And the good: -Easy to set up (firmware issues aside) -Great range/coverage/speed -Ethernet port works in Extender mode I bought it for OneMesh, so I'm pretty disappointed that I couldn't put it into AP mode and benefit from wired connection - instead I have to try and get the wifi signal from across the house which really hurts the speeds or set up a different SSID and juggle between the two of them.

Installation is very straight forward. Created a complete OneMesh installation with 2 of these RE605X and a AX6000 router. Needed to cover 4 levels and 4000+ square feet with multiple concreate and block walls and metal partitions. When you first configure these extenders with the Tether app it takes about 3 minutes each. After that they are up and running on the OneMesh from the AX6000 main router. Both 2.4 and 5G radios working perfectly. I wanted the final location to be past the half way point to the dead zones so I used the gigabit port on them to connect with the existing Cat6e cable though a managed switch back to the router. They did not immediately convert as Access Points and instead tried to act as the DHCP to the devices on the on the switch located half way back to the main router and pass them on through WIFI, it works but not optimum for my installation. I had to dig a little further into the tether app and find the tools icon at the bottom that brought up a list I needed. There is an 'operation mode' near the bottom of the extensive list of tools that allows the switch from 'range extender' to 'Access point' which does not require a strong wireless signal back to the router. Flipped the mode the RE605X turns off the local DHCP and turns off the radio back to the router, Reboots and offers full speed Gigabit connection direct to the router for any wireless devices in that area. This makes WIFI speed faster because it does not have to retransmitted data to router over the WIFI. The seamless WIFI walk through the whole space and multi-levels works so much better then the old SSID hopping that was required before. This solution covered the dead zones much better then some of the other mesh solutions I have tried before. We had to abandon the other pretty looking meshes we had tried as they did not work reliably enough for our requirements. The only complaint that I have about the TP-LINK solution is that I cannot name the multiple RE605X devices that show up on network. I have kind of solved that by noting the MAC address and adding that number on a label added to the front of each. With out the MAC difference they appear identical in the app so you have no way of knowing which one your are selecting and which you are configuring due to the lack of ability to uniquely identify them. I might add a another Range extender or two in the future to increase the coverage of the outside space. We still have serval feet of snow out there right now so no one is using the picnic tables to test WIFI strength, so it will be several weeks before we get out and test how well the coverage has extended outside the walls. I will have to check if TP-LINK offers any solutions that are more weather proof than the RE605X for outdoor WIFI coverage. So in summary my first experience with the TP-LINK ONEMESH has been extremely positive. It has easily solved several problems we had some other vendors mesh solutions and we were able to create a very affordable single SSID mesh that automatically connects WIFI devices to the best access point using the optimal frequency and our users do not have to keep searching for the strongest WIFI signal to connect to as they move through the space the OneMesh does it all automagically for them.
