This original adventure of a lovable New York City dog named Jaxx is my favorite children’s book of 2016. Not only is it exciting, realistic, humorous and heart-warming, but it’s also educational. Your heart will go out to this happy-go-lucky dog who gets separated from his loving human family during a snow-storm. He’s freezing and wretched when, fortunately, he’s rescued by some people at the Metropolitan Opera, of all places. What happens to Jaxx there? How does he fit in? To answer my own question, his lovable nature endears him to the entire opera crew--from janitors to the resident cat and even the stars. He’s comfortable there, but is miserable because he misses his humans. What happens between this brave little pet and the on-set and house animals to make Jaxx a hero? What interesting proposition does the Opera’s star singer make to him? And how does he react to learning the ins-and-outs of the huge Opera House? But most important, does he ever find his family again? If not, what happens to him? Prolific author Joanna Lee Doster weaves a charming story--filled with challenges and surprises--with great pacing and a huge sense of humor and adventure. I cried with Jaxx, I laughed with him… and even held my breath at moments. All of that while learning a lot about the Metropolitan Opera House and about human nature... invaluable lessons for children and adults alike. What a fun read; perfect pacing and excellent craftsmanship from this popular author. I look forward to more “Tails of Jaxx…” Endnote: This story is based on the author’s very own dog “Jack - The Wonder Dog” who in real life starred at the Metropolitan Opera. A beautiful, well-groomed dog, Jack is very similar in appearance to Jaxx as he’s depicted on the stunning cover of this book. JAXX AT THE METROPOLITAN OPERA is a delight! It leaves you with the warm, caring feelings that emanate off its pages. As a retired elementary teacher, I immediately saw it as an "I Can Read" book for second and third graders. Those older will enjoy it, too. And parents, or siblings, will have fun reading it to younger children. Ms. Doster has astutely divided JAXX into chapters that can be easily handled in one sitting. Each chapter offers a variety of ideas, information, and human sentiments and behaviors for teaches and parents to use in stimulating discussion with JAXX's readers. I see the book as also leading to creative writing, music, and art projects. Why not an integrated social studies unit? I applaud Ms. Doster's incorporation of easy, common French phrases, accompanied by an appended English translation dictionary. All in all, Joanna Lee Doster has given us a small book large with riches to be mined by young developing readers.

I'd recommend this book to adults and children alike. It gives a lovely inside view to the workings of the Metropolitan Opera in an easy to understand format. The little dog is adorable. A fun and educational read with a little bit of bravery and heroism too! Can't wait to see more from this author. Also, hopefully this will become available in print!

What a great story. It's always wonderful when an author incorporates a story that will educate young children as well as entertain them. This story will certainly be a favorite for years to come.

My daughter and I read this book and absolutely loved it! For my preteen sometimes reading can be a chore, but not with this book! My daughter kept asking me to read chapter after chapter. And we weren’t disappointed with the twist and turns either. It was a darling book that we will never forget. She’s so grateful to have it on her bookshelf.

What a terrific book! I really got into the spirit and adventures of Jaxx when he gets lost in New York's Central Park and ends up at Lincoln Center. The author does a great job creating the Metropolitan Opera and the backstage characters. This story of hope and courage will appeal to children and adults, especially dog lovers and opera fans!
