I have so many thoughts. This book was riveting for me. It had me hooked from the beginning and I couldn't wait to see where it went. So dramatic! So emotional! 2 books within another book, the story is fantastic. Also, it has moments where it's none of those things. The writing is amazing until a line comes along that is cliche and cheesy and doesn't fit. But it's still a wonderful read. And then the plot does something... amateurish. But it's still a fabulous read. And then the details maybe don't line up, maybe there are plot holes? But you still are obsessed. And the characters are really and relatable and then you hate them and feel like they do things wildly out of character. But you don't care, you still care about every wrinkle of face and dress. I kinda feel like the author and the editor bumped heads and the weird bits are the author giving in to the editor's incorrect changes. It's really, really good though, and I thought about this book every time I wasn't reading it. I woke up in the night to finish it.

This was my first experience reading one of Ms. Davis books and it did not dissapoint. As another reviewer said, it's 2 books within another book. All so interesting and emotional. I could not wait to see how it all ended. I found the characters so interesting. The telling of the story from the perspective of the characters was such a great way to tell the story. This was a real page turner and I highly recommend this book.

I'm sitting in a doctor's office waiting room with tears in my eyes as I finish this beautiful book. It may be my favorite book I've read this year. The writing is so compelling, the stories in the two timelines, 1984 and 1941, meshing perfectly, with a wonderful ending.

I gave this books 5 Stars despite having one negative to share, so I'll get that over first. I LOVE the storyline! Even though I don't care for multiple storylines & multiple protagonists, that doesn't stop me from reading such books. I really DO think this group of story lines work well together, however it felt as if it was stretched a bit, as if to make it "fit" something specific. Partly I'm sure this was to fit the different storylines together, which I understand, but it just seemed to me that some things could have been blended more smoothly to make reading more concise, to remove redundancies. Other than that, as I said, it's a great read! The multiple storylines are handled MUCH better than most books of this sort that I've read, especially with the number of storylines!! The characters are well written. There were times I thought, "Hmmm, I must have been mistaken in how I saw this person!", only to quickly see that I WASN'T wrong at all! The "villains " are relatively easy to spot, & the "good guys" easily became my new friends. There is a quote from Ashlyn, at the beginning of Chapter 14, that could have come straight from my heart: "In the happiest times of my life, I have reached for my books. In the saddest times of my life, my books have reached back." This is one of the books which will reach back, sometime in my future! I highly recommend this book to readers of Historical novels, Romance, & even Mysteries, though it isn't a mystery per se.

So, this book was predictable… but also a heart gripping story. Barbara had me for a moment there and I thought the characters were going to choose to be miserable but then… well… you’ll have to read it to find out. I will say it was masterfully planned and executed in its themes and literary strategies.

This book is a fantastic story, and I can’t wait to read more by the author. It’s well written, I’m pulled into the story, and I look forward to every chapter. Definitely recommend. Just want to thank Amazon for replacing the first copy I ordered as it was falling apart. The second book looks well-made and undamaged and I’m very very happy. Sometimes things happen, you just have to take it in stride. The author deserves a five star review and Amazon also deserves a five star review for taking care of things and making sure that I ended up with copy of the book. Thank you.

Telemetry - interesting premise, but it wasn't explored as much, nor formed as crucial a part of the story as I thought it would. All told this was a good read, but not terribly memorable. A decent 3.5 stars.

This book really touched my heart. It is a book that has really made an impression on me. I love a book about books. This tale is predominantly told from 3 POV’s. We have Ashlyn in the present, she owns a rare book shop that was gifted to her by the owner. IT was a place of solace for her as she was coping with a tragic childhood. When she touches old books she feels emotions from them. One day books are dropped off and she is itching to read them especially as they both start off with “How could you do it?” She quickly realises they are from a couple that were once together. She senses that each version is not the whole story. The puzzling thing is who are the authors? There are no names and it piques Ashlyn’s curiosity. In the not too distant past we have two people, Belle who is from a well to do family, a father who only cared about appearances whilst he cozied up to people who he could help him get to where he wanted to get in society. A mother she adored who was broken and sent away and an older sister who toed the line and despised the fact that Belle would challenge it. Hemi is a struggling writer come journalist who happened to be in the right place at the right time. He stumbles upon a much older woman ahead of her time who inherited her family’s newspaper business and she uses the paper to bring down anyone including the high and mighty to expose their failings and more. When Hemi meets Belle he does not have two pennies to rub together. He is charming and to him he is investigating a story about Belle’s family. But their attraction is undeniable. Trouble is Belle is engaged to a man her father has chosen….. Ashlyn wants to find out their real names and feels it in her bones that there is unfinished business between the pair. Her investigations take her to the man who dropped off the books. While Ashlyn is so busy trying to get to the bottom of things another story is playing out right in front of her eyes. This story is about love, betrayal and sacrifices, I absolutely loved it.

Absolut empfehlenswert!
