The most underrated football rom-com ever made (probably the only one ever made). Expect a fun romp, and you will not be disappointed. As football movies go, this is right up there with the original Longest Yard (with Burt Reynolds).
Don't think about the set-up too hard. The pro players are going on strike, so this particular team hires temporary "replacements," including a replacement coach. Somehow, they are playing against other pro teams with players who are not on strike. Somehow, the strike also includes the cheerleaders (but not the head cheerleader). ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ It's a movie. Just suspend your disbelief and go with it.
Outstanding cast, including Gene Hackman as the replacement coach, and Jack Warden as the team owner – his final turn on screen. Keanu Reeves is likable and believable as a former OSU quarterback infamous for throwing away the Sugar Bowl game. He's surrounded by an outstanding comedic cast of other replacement players, including Jon Favreau and many more you will recognize. Hilarious cameos by Pat Summeral and John Madden.
If the long-shot games don't have you rooting for Reeves' character, the romantic subplot with the head cheerleader will.
If you like football movies, and you've never seen this one, you will wonder where this has been all your life. If you like rom-coms, this does that category a solid too. If you like films that make you laugh, cry, and leave you feeling better about the world and everyone in it – this is for you too. Great date movie. Pop some corn and enjoy.

Howard Deutch’s 2000 film, “The Replacements,” draws its inspiration from the 1987 NFL strike and the Washington football team’s ability to win replacement games without regular players. The story focuses on Coach Jimmy McGinty (Gene Hackman) who brings in players that never quite got their chance to play professionally, including quarterback Shane Falco (Keanu Reeves), Clifford Franklin (Orlando Jones), Jamal Abdul Jackson and Andre Jackson (Faizon Love and Michael Taliferro), Nigel Gruff (Rhys Ifans), Danny Bateman (Jon Favreau), and more. These unlikely people must learn to work as a team and overcome the issues that prevented them from succeeding in their first chance while Falco himself forms a relationship with Annabelle Farrell (Brooke Langton), the head cheerleader. Regardless of the positive portrayal of crossing the strike line, the film is a phenomenal sports movie and even includes John Madden and Pat Summerall as themselves. Great for sports fans as well as those who want to see these actors in some of their earlier work.

My absolute favorite football movie of all time! Granted there are several, but there's just so much joy in watching this movie, all the characters showing up individually yet collectively at times when the scene required them to. I will not mention all the actors, this can be found elsewhere but if you have not seen this movie do yourself a favor and give it a watch! A keeper for sure!

One of my all-time favorite movies. You don’t have to be a football fan to love it. Funny, sexy, and there is even the Romcom aspect. The late great Gene Hackman, Reeves, and host of other misfits. And who could not enjoy watching the big Man, John Madden.

Can't go wrong with Gene Hackman and Keanu Reeves starring in it.

A great "feel good" movie! We watch it at least once or twice a year. "First I was afraid, I was petrified . . ."

I always loved that movie. The chemistry between Mr. Hackman and K. Reeves is amazing plus the love interest between Reeves and Langton is Very great acting. Love the story. It always get interesting, when the Director let the actors improvise certain phrases, or actions. Actors like Gene Hackman and Reeves they know their craft. When Hackman annonce to Falco that it was over for him. and before he leaves gives him a hug. ( this was not in the script. Hackman just did it, to the surprise of Reeves, so the surprise on his face was genuine ).
