Yes, there is that recently released stripped-down mix version, and it sounds different at least, but... I keep going back to the college version, because it still blasts, even with too much echo and 80s production... Just put it on, let the songs lift you up... Paul Westerberg was just glimpsing his own peculiar genius on this major label shift.. ANd this set really stands up, as fresh as it was in '85.

This album is number two on my top 5 favorite albums of all time. Mostly because I find the music to be epic, fun and very moving as well. "Left Of The Dial" is one of my favorite songs of all time and is widly considered the ultimate college rock anthem. Plus, the lyrics are really great as well. Some other great tracks are "Bastards Of Young" which is one of the most defining songs of generation x in my mind. Also, "Hold My Life" which has amazing vocal work by Paul Westerberg. "Kiss Me On The Bus" is one of the more poppy songs on the album and is fun to sing along with. "Swingin' Party" and "Little Mascara" are beautiful. "Here Comes A Regular" is one of my favorite bittersweet ballads of all time and it also includes the best piano solo ever. Even some of the heavier tracks like "Lay It Down Clown" are unique, fun and more blues driven then the tracks on Sorry Ma, Forgot To Take Out The Trash. I can understand why bands like The Goo Goo Dolls and Green Day take so much influence from this band. The Mats wrote some of the most inspired music to come out of the undergroud in the 80s and 90s and in my mind should have been bigger and more popular than Nirvana. This is great music and not to be missed. I think that anyone can like The Mats if they give them a try. From the fast and sudden opening of "Hold My Life" to the lovely final fade out of "Here Comes A Regular", this album is a masterpiece!!

While they never achieved mainstream success, the Replacements are among the top 10 bands of all time IMO. They're kind of like the Velvet Underground in that their impact on other musicians was much, much greater than their overall popularity might suggest. And their two masterpieces were Let It Be and Tim. Tim is pure Paul Westerberg. A mix of musical styles, but all with the same theme - about the kids who don't quite fit in with the mainstream. While the whole album is amazing, Tim has a few tracks that stand out. Bastards of Young is the closest the Mats ever got to a true rock anthem. Kiss Me on the Bus has become a classic, while Left of the Dial and I'll Buy resonate long after the song is over. Even sort of goofy tracks like Waitress in the Sky (about flight attendants) increasingly grow on you. The reissue version has some bonus tracks, including both acoustic and electric versions of Can't Hardly Wait, which was written for Tim, but was left off the album, and appeared later on Pleased to Meet Me. If you're a Mats fan, you probably already own Tim. If you're new to the band, start with Let It Be, Tim and one of the first two albums (probably Stink). Then, go buy the rest.

This is a review of the Expanded Edition from 2008. I held off on the reissues for a long time (aside from the new edition of Sorry Ma... which has like 20 bonus tracks!) and am glad I was able to track this one down. It seems now to be out of print possibly? The album itself is great, the last great Replacements album. After this they kicked Bob out of the band and were never the same. Westerberg was an amazing songwriter, but Bob was the heart and soul of the band. The bonus tracks here are themselves worth the price of admission: two versions of Can't Hardly Wait (one acoustic, one rockin', both top the version on Pleased to Meet Me), some rare tunes and unissued demos, and an blistering uptempo studio demo of Kiss Me on the Bus that singlehandedly exemplifies what was so amazing about this band: Pure unbridled rock n roll coupled with smart, evocative and funny lyrics. The CD is worth it for this track alone, and if you're a Mats fan, you'll need this in your library.

Many people have hyped The Replacements and Paul Westerberg to me, but my attempts to explore this music didn't click. This time, I finally hear it. I hear the Americanness of The Heartbreakers (Johnny Thunders, Walter Lure, Jerry Nolan and Billy Rath) and The Dead Boys, the punk energy of The Clash, and the lyricism of Ian Hunter, lyrics that are imaginative and insightful as to the human condition for working class American kids having crossed the brink of adulthood. Too smart, too wild and free, too everything-rock'n'roll-is-supposed-to-be for mainstream success. If The Replacements had produced a couple of hit singles like The Clash's "Should I Stay or Should I Go" or "Rock the Casbah," they could have spared fans like me the indignity of having Springsteen and Mellencamp shoved down our throats.

There's a video interview from 1984 between a jerk from a radio station and Tommy Stinson and Paul Westerberg where Bob Stinson comes on camera and says "let's stop this mess", then looks at Mr. Westerberg and his brother and continues with "they're fired", followed by "and I quit".It's sad, looking back, a few years before Tim's release, that what he said was partly the drunken truth. Tim still turned out to be a great album. It would be the last time , all be it a strained mess amongst them , as an original member Replacement effort. It was pretty evident that anything recorded after that would turn into a Paul Westerberg project. Not that it would signal red flags for a future as a band, but good God, everything was broken when Bob Stinson was gone/left/was politely asked to leave. He was a great guitar player, and I don't think that can ever be said enough. I don't even think he knew it.
