Not the best choice for African-American natural hair maintenance. I recently began transitioning my hair to natural styling and associated maintenance. I selected specialty shampoo, conditioning and styling products that focus on natural hair maintenance and grooming. Fast-forward: I learned that I'm allergic to certain hair product ingredients and I should use fragrance-free, allergen-free products. My dermatologist recommended Vanicream line of products. Use of their shampoo and conditioners works well though not as much moisturizing as my original products for natural hair. I later began using the Vanicream styling gel. This item does not leave my hair as soft and moisturized as my original styling products. The Vanicream line of products are excellent if you are professionally advised to use only fragrance-free, allergen-free hair products.

Great product!! Due to allergy and skin problems, I now have to use a lot of this line. This styling gel is perfect after the shampoo and conditioner, and I can just finger comb my hair with water to reactivate it for days! Totally recommend!

The first time I used this styling gel was after washing with the Vanicream shampoo and my usual conditioner. I worked a dime-sized amount of gel through my damp hair. After blow drying and using a flat iron, my fine hair looked somewhat bouncy and slightly fly-away. I liked that the gel did not seem to weigh down my hair. I do not wash my hair daily, so the next day I noticed my hair felt dry and looked dull. No shine, but matte looking. Then after using a curling iron with no other product added, I noticed the curl drooped after a couple of hours. My hair looked like it was weighed down and overly soft. I did not try this gel with any other shampoo but returned it because I did not like the dull and droopy look. If your hair is not too fine and does not tend to be weighted down with products, you may have a better experience and find that it holds your hair moderately well. This gel did not irritate my scalp, although mine is only slightly sensitive.

I have extremely sensitive skin and over the last couple of years I had to quit using hair products, hair color and make-up which was pretty hard for me as former hairdresser and colorist. Vanicream makes Free & Clear Gel and I also use Vanicream Medicated Shampoo, Conditioner, Moisturizing Cream, Sunscreen Sport Broad Spectrum SPF 35 and Moisturizing Ointment, but was hesitant to use the gel because I have naturally almost black hair and my experience with gel and dark hair is that once the gel dries it tends to turn into white flakes. So, I was utilizing the Moisturizing Cream as a sort of hair cream to keep my hair in place and it worked great when my hair was fairly short (gotta get creative!). I am growing it out a bit. It's about 6 inches long now, so I thought I'd go ahead and try the hair gel. I was pleased to find that the hair gel did not leave any flakes in my hair. I use it on towel dried hair - and sometimes diffuse my hair, then follow up with a pea size amount of the Moisturizing Cream on the ends. If I need some lift, I will use a little bit more of the gel on my fingertips at the roots. If I do not diffuse my hair, I will add the gel to towel dried hair and twist my hair back and pin it. The next day, I'll have a twist and can simply add more of the gel to my dry hair and my hair will stay perfectly with the gel. Again, the gel leaves no white flakes and it has no smell or scent. I can usually keep the style for two or three days between shampoos. It's a great product and I highly recommend it. I will have to try the hairspray next. Everyone's allergies are different, so just because a product is safe for most people with allergies, it does not mean every single person will be able to use it, so just be aware - do a patch test first if you're not sure. I have tried dozens of products over the last thirty-some years and at least for now, this product line has been SUPER and the ONLY skin care and hair care line that I can use. This former hair product, hair color and make-up addict is now hair color-free, make-up free but no longer, hair-product free!

Love this hair gel. I have reordered 2 more tubes of gel & gifted 1 to my friend because she tried mine & loves it as much as I do. We both wear our shoulder length long hair in up dos. the gel keeps the wisps tidy & stops annoying stray hairs from floating into eyes. We both have sensitive skin & asthma - the gel has never affected either of our sensitivities. Note : gel is now called Vanicream hair gel for sensitive skin

I bought this for a friend that had horrendous reactions to any hair and skin products which contained additives such as fragrance etc. she has used this product and it has been a great success with no allergic reactions. You only need to use it Liberally a small amount goes a long way. Would highly recommend.
