So Microsoft was never very clear on what was necessary to run an external hard drive on the XBox One. Their requirements are: - Must be USB 3 - Must be big enough That's pretty much it. Sadly? Those are NOT the requirements. Nobody knows what the requirements are, but if you take a perfectly good USB 3 hard disk and hook it up you will get VERY unpredictable results. Sometimes it disappears. Sometimes it loses data. Sometimes it works ok. Sometimes your game quits when you aren't at a save point and you put the controller through the screen of your very expensive and irreplaceable plasma TV in anger... Then you start shopping for a legitimate drive. And you discover that there's no such thing. Microsoft doesn't sell one. There's a seagate (it's GREEN. Bright green.) and a Western Digital. Having had a recent string of failed Seagate drives (which could certainly change to WD in the near future, they tend to take turns) I opted for WD. And I couldn't be happier. Plugged it in, set it on top of the XBox, and promptly FORGOT IT WAS THERE BECAUSE IT JUST WORKS. Physically it's thicker than a normal drive (is there a large hard disk in there or is that extra electronics or just a bulky case? I don't know!) ### UPDATE: It turns out that it's a thicker disk. More spindles, more reliable. Or so they claim. But definitely a bulkier drive. ### The footprint is roughly the same. It's sleek, it's quiet, and it's fast. That's really all that matters since the XBox One is such a black box (in spite of running Windows 10). I have no complaints, it runs great.

Anyone who owns an Xbox One can attest to the irritation of having to install every game you want to play on the hard drive that comes with very limited space. This is the perfect answer to keep adding games to your collection without having to either sweat it out over which games live or die on your hard drive or play russian roulette with your currently installed games to make room for a new one. With 2 TB of space added on, I can comfortable install all my games with plenty of room to spare. This page, and other reviewers, said that after you plugged in the external drive that the Xbox One detected it and put instructions on the screen to follow so you could use it. I did not get this prompting and had to suss out how to manually set up the drive: 1. Press Menu (start) and select "Settings" 2. Select "Manage Storage" 3. Select the storage device and select "Format for Games and Apps" After the formatting is done, you can go to the Games and Apps area and (hopefully) notice a lovely 2 TB increase to your space. You can use the "Manage Game" function to move games to and fro the local and external drives. When installing, you can select the external as your primary installation destination.

Works like a charm! Have had no issues, lots of room to still use, and installing was a breeze. Just as they say when you hook the harddrive into your xbox you are asked about the formatting and what the drive is planned for the drive. Just reformat it as storage and you are good to go. Works in seconds switching everything over to your harddrive.

For a while I was getting worried about having to buy a new console for more storage. I looked around and found the WD 2TB My Passport X for Xbox One Portable External Hard Drive. The reviews were great, I ordered and kept my fingers crossed. I'm very pleased to say, that this was a very great buy on Amazon and worth every penny. The set-up was so easy, just followed the instructions my Xbox One gave me and POOOOF.....mo...mo...storage! Update, I recently sold my Xbox but kept the hard drive to use on my PC, works perfectly! 🙂

Passport X was just released a couple weeks ago, and Amazon has been offering it for $99, which is $40 under MSRP. At $99, this is an ok buy, but it's much less so at $139. This is the first drive I've connected to the XB1, so I can't tell you if it's faster than other cheaper "non-gamer" models that have been on the market for a while, but it seems ok, not mind blowing. This drive doesn't come pre-loaded with backup software that other externals do, but since the drive is reformatted by the XB1 when you first plug it in I don't really think that it even matters whether there's existing software on the drive or not. The plug and play capability is nice, but again, I'm pretty sure that is not a feature unique to this drive. Since Western Digital doesn't mention exactly why this drive is beneficial to gamers, I have to suspect if this isn't just a normal external from another line with a case that matches the XB1 and a daring "X" slapped on it offered at an inflated list price. Still, at $99 it's only a $10-20 gamble over other options that are priced less, so I was willing to make the stretch and go on faith. And at the end of the day it does work well with no hassle, even though I'm cognizant of the fact that other lower priced drives would probably work the same way. At the $139 MSRP though I wouldn't have touched this.
