There isn’t much that surprises me when it comes to reading books. I’m what you’d call a seasoned vet. Having said that, you have to be a pretty good author to fool me in a story line, but I have to say McFadden did an amazing job in keeping the reader guessing. Amy Brenner is a medical student and just recently went through a breakup with her boyfriend, Cameron. Although she would have preferred to not be assigned to Ward D, it was a terrific way for her to earn extra credit and to take her mind off of her breakup. But, as luck would have it, if you can call it that, poor Amy was not only assigned to Ward D, the psyche unit, but her ex-boyfriend was also assigned. And to make matters even worse, one of the patients there was someone that Amy knew very personally. Amy was upset and distraught. Even though, she needed the extra credit to help catapult her medical career. Try as he might, Cameron did everything to let Amy know he made a mistake in breaking up with her. And Amy wasn’t even trying to hear it. She had been there and done that. Besides, Cameron was a huge suck-up and couldn’t get enough of Dr. Beck. It was driving Amy nuts. Speaking of which, Amy and Cameron were assigned patients they needed to follow throughout the evening. Dr. Beck made it clear what the rules were. He gave them the secret code to get out of the building, in case of emergency. He advised that the patients were allowed to roam around and be treated with the utmost respect and more importantly—no matter what they did, neither of them were to go near Seclusion Room One. Hmm? Why couldn’t they go near there? As Amy was making her rounds for the evening, she heard a noise coming from Seclusion One. It sounded like someone snarling and growling. But what was worse this person sounded like he was breaking through the door. Amy was terrified, but she knew no matter what she wasn’t going near that room. Amy returns to the lounge area to see what type of patients Cameron had been observing when she noticed she couldn’t find him. In fact, there were a few patients that were missing too. Where did they go and why? When Amy confronts Dr. Beck about the whereabouts of her friend, Cameron, and some of the patients, he’s just as baffled too. There was one patient everyone was terrified of and one whom Amy was anxious to meet, but would she? In order to find out more, you have to read the book. OMG! Let me tell you, I gobbled up this book so fast it made me angry that I finished it so quickly. This was one of the best horror books I’ve read in quite a while. I’m happy to report I figured it out, but McFadden threw in a twist at the end that caught me by total surprise. And for that, she gets major kudos. It takes one heck of an author to fool me, and she got me in the end. This is my type of horror book! I could not get enough of this story. She wrote the words off the pages. I felt terrified and my heart was beating fast. Those patients were pretty scary and not knowing what was happening was even worse. It’s not knowing that brings fear and makes for a good horror story. McFadden executed that well.

I did not see the ending coming with this one. I enjoyed this book very much - lots of twists and turns that leave you guessing. It was scary-suspenseful, but at the same time she did a masterful job of making some of the characters lovable and endearing! Which only adds to the suspense - is the character really a sweetheart, or the murderer? The only reason I did not give this a 5 star is because many of Freida's books have a common thread of women with ex-boyfriend issues. Such was the case again. Not necessary, and it put a damper on what otherwise was an excellent book.

I liked this mystery a lot. Held my attention well. Read it in 3-4 days at 3 hours each day.

Her stories are always well crafted but I would enjoy them more if the writing was above a 6th grade level. They feel like Agatha Christie novels for dummies, as if this generation has lost ability to appreciate anything more eloquent or complex. It was an entertaining a quick read, nothing I will remember a week from now but it gave me something to do for a couple nights. I finished this entire book in just two evenings- you could say it is a page turner. I enjoyed the plot twists although I predicted most of them. I would rather delve into a mystery that I can’t figure out until the last page. This is a locked room suspense novel for 7th graders at best. Still, not bad.

As popular as Frieda McFadden is on Book Tok & Goodreads for her thriller novels, I was unsure if I would become a fan. FM’s first book I read was Never Lie which I ended up thinking was a little bland/an average read at best 3/5 stars. I picked up Ward D while it was on sale in the kindle store solely based on its cover (as I do with most of my purchases lol). Little did I know what a treat I was in for! It started off quick, strong and unsettling. A short read with clever twists and turns I simply could not put it down. While I can admit I did end up guessing the twist at the end early on, it didn’t deter from the experience. I will definitely be picking up some more FM books in the near future! Ward D was a strong five star contender up until the very end. I just felt like the final act didn’t pack the punch I was expecting after so much build up. Amy is a hoot. Final verdict 4.3/5 stars

A med student endures the longest twelve hour shift when the psych unit isn't what she wishes to go into. Most find this shift the easiest but who can you believe in Ward D? A women who knits but hates knitting or a man who claims he grows webs out of his hands? And what happens when one patient just happens to be your best friend years ago. This is a speed read and heart beating thriller.

I couldn't put this book down! Amy is in med school and is assigned to work over night in a psych ward. She is dreading the assignment before she even started it. As soon as she starts it, she realizes she has to survive the night. The characters were all interesting and the story kept me on the edge of my seat. Just when I thought I had this figured out there wouldbe a plot test. Thd ending blew me away. I wouldn't complain if there is a sequel. This is a must read for anyone who enjoys psych thrillers.

Having actually covered the night shift on an inpatient unit several times, the scenery described is accurate and certainly chill inducing. Plot twists in every chapter! An easy to read, suspenseful plot will keep you turning the pages until completion!

Good for when you want to pick up reading after a long time. Easy to read but could have been shorter

First time I’d been only 7 and a half hours to read this amazing masterpiece. And first time I had ever been so scared reading a book written by Freida McFadden. Now I know the meaning of “unputdownable thrillers”
